How do you make a local beer, something that is 100% North Battleford, Saskatchewan? Listen as Brennan from Armoury Brewing Company explains how they achieved this goal much sooner than they had planned.

What makes a brewery a craft brewery? One of the defining aspects is that it cannot produce more than 400,000 hectolitres of beer, with most craft breweries producing much less. These smaller batches mean better flavours, better ingredients and better beer.

We are often asked, who drinks craft beer? The answer is everyone. Its a product for us as Saskatchewan people to be proud of. It builds our communities by supporting local, it just tastes better, and because its brewed in smaller batches, we are able to create a wider variety of unique flavours.

What makes craft beer so special? Is it our attention to detail in sourcing local ingredients that stimulates growth in our agricultural sector? Is it our superfan customers who create a community around every taproom? Or is it that feeling you get at the end of a perfect pint and the best conversation with your friends? We might never know.

Great beer is even better with great food. Many of our taprooms have partnered with amazing food services to complete the in-person experience. These partnerships help you enjoy your craft beer and also help stimulate the economy by making creative spaces for other small businesses.

How high can you count before you lose track? If the answer is 4.37 million, then you have something in common with the total amount of craft beer pints consumed in 2019 in Saskatchewan. Lets raise a glass to that!

Rebellion Brewing Co has opened its patio and limited indoor seating in their taproom. It was a cold long lonely winter without access to our favourite craft beer community, but finally, we can enjoy a pint together. Before Covid-19, most Saskatchewan Craft Brewers were breaking sales records and anticipating growing even more. We were bringing home national and international awards for our beer and putting Saskatchewan on the map as one of the best craft beer regions in the world. Most Saskatchewan craft breweries are less than five years old, predominantly owned by local grass-roots entrepreneurs, and are capital-intensive businesses with rapid growth and expansion. This means we dont have the resources to sustain a prolonged interruption to business. Craft brewing has become big business in Saskatchewan and is key to our Agri-Value industry. As a collective, the members of the Saskatchewan Craft Brewers Association (SCBA) have gathered to raise money for the members who cant sell beer at this time. We have brewed a special collaboration Milkshake IPA, named Refrigerate this Beer, with proceeds going directly to members in need. This milkshake IPA features aromas of berries, vanilla and citrus, a creamy mouthfeel, and a combination of sweet, juicy and tart flavours with a firm, bitter finish. It is 6.5% abv / 45 IBU. Think small. I mean like really small. Like nano small. In Saskatchewan, we have all kinds of craft breweries but a nano brewery produces such small batches they can play with unique and unusual ingredients. So special its only available in their taproom.

Why visit a taproom? Its a relaxing and fun place to experience different flavours right where they are brewed. Visiting taprooms is a great opportunity to chat with the people who make the product and be part of the community. Kari is the president of the Saskatchewan Craft Brewers Association and one of the owners of Black Bridge Brewery.

There are many kinds of craft brewers. Some are called nano breweries like Shelter Brewing Company which means they are a small operation brewing only 1.5 hl. This means they only produce enough to be sold directly from the taproom and gives them the flexibility to create more experimental styles of beer.

In Saskatchewan, we have a very diverse mix of all things craft beer. There are limitless flavours to explore for every kind of personality. In taprooms across the province people are finding their favourites. Whats yours?
