In 2018, the city of Vancouver gave Indigenous names to two of its most important open spaces. In addition to the plaza adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the Vancouver Art Gallery's North Plaza was named šxnq Xwtl'e7enk Square, which means "a place where a cultural gathering occurs". . . The name incorporates languages of all three First Nations people - Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh. .... . While "šxnq" belongs to the hnqminm language (spoken by the Musqueam and the Tsleil-Waututh peoples), "Xwtl'e7enk" comes from the Skwxwu7mesh language (of the Squamish Nation). . . Welcome to the Longhouse Suite! Upon entering, guests are greeted by a striking feature wall representing a "housefront" with a human welcome figure. The installation signifies guests' arrival at their temporary home and imparts a sense of comfort for weary travellers. . . A second welcome figure, an illuminated stainless steel totem carved with bear motifs, lights the path into the suite. The brighten bear totem thus greets visitors at the entrance of their new "home" and ...identifies them as honoured guests during their stay at Skwachàys Lodge. . . Modern in design but traditional in inspiration, each artistic piece within the Longhouse Suite pays tribute to traditional customs in Northwest Coast Aboriginal society.
