While 2020 was a tough year for everyone, we tried our best to maintain and grow our studio culture while working from home. Here’s a look back at some studio highlights from the last year. Here’s wishing everyone a happy 2021! Starting from the top left: 1 - We kicked off the year releasing our indie title, the cinematic platformer, Stela, on Nintendo Switch and Steam. 2 - We started doing our Friday beer o’clocks on Discord. Here’s our co-founder Shyang showing us how to ...cook during one of our Friday get togethers. 3 - We created a daily work-from-home activities channel on the company Slack. Everyday someone posed a new icebreaker question so that we could all continue getting to know team members old and new while working from home. 4 - Team members Parker, Candace, and Kim created a lab on how to make video games for Science World’s Girls in STEAM event. 5 - We celebrated our 9-year studio anniversary with custom brews from House of Funk. 6 - We started doing internal game jams! 7 - We announced our partnership with Wizards of the Coast, supporting development of Magic: The Gathering Arena. 8 - We kept our halloween traditions going with our annual costume contest. 9 - We ended the year with a series of work from home holiday events. Every year end, one thing we always look forward to is the SkyBox Labs Christmas party. It’s a night filled with great friends & food, holiday games & activities, and maybe even a karaoke sing-along or two, or fifty. By mid-year we all knew it wasn’t going to happen. So, our social committee got together to figure out how we could still experience the holidays together as a team, but from home. Well, they knocked it out of the park! They created these great gift packs f...eaturing SBL branded items including a throw, wine glasses, and an Xbox Series S/X controller. Each gift was separately wrapped and had a specific date attached to it. This is where the fun started. The gifts were dated for each of the Fridays in December before Christmas. When opened, they corresponded to a fun studio-wide holiday event. Week 1 was a movie night. We all got together to watch holiday movies using Netflix Party. Week 2 was games night. We all joined up on Discord to play studio favourites. Finally, for the third week we used the wine glasses to meet up virtually and share a toast. While it wasn't the party that we were all used to having, it was a great way to spend some quality time with the people we love to work with.
