Alright as promised another little rambling about Niagara River Trout fishing. First off, the Niagara River is to be respected at all times, from shore or boat.... If you have never been, its best to go with a friend who has or consider hiring a guide. This can be applied to both the Lower & Upper sections of the river. While the lower sees better numbers, the upper fishes well too at times. As with all other fisheries things change year to year but most often the general timing patterns hold true. Brown trout will enter in the river in Oct, shortly behind the salmon, and then the rainbows (aka Steelhead) after them. Most years, it is early-mid Nov when things set up. The rainbows seem to often shoot through the river quickly to get to the faster sections they prefer, while the browns are in the slower parts. The most common and productive bait during this time period is fishing roe (eggs/spawn) or imitations. From Sept through Nov there is a constant amount of salmon, brown & lake trout roe naturally flowing in the river. Roe bags, yarn flies & beads in various colors shades of orange, peach & pink are popular. For the boat anglers, bottom bouncing is the most common method using a 3 way rig. Simply it’s a 3 way swivel first connected to your mainline. Secondly a small piece of light mono about 4-6 inches to tie on your weights. Pencil weights 1/2oz to 1oz are most common, it depends on the depth & current speed you are fishing. Finally a 4-6 foot piece of line, preferably 6-8lb test fluorocarbon is attached to you hook/bait. Again this is generally speaking as the river water clarity will impact the length of your leader & size/color of your bait. Shore anglers will either float fish or bottom bounce. Usually in Dec things change as the natural abundance of roe in the system, decreases, it can still be productive, the trout begin to feed on the smelt & emerald shiners in the river . This is when switching to streamers & soft plastics can work well. This will hold true until March when the steelhead begin to spawn & the roe bite gets better again. Come late March the browns will mostly be back out in the lake. Steelhead fishing can be good some years in the river right until early May. There are many factors at play of course which can affect the fishing in the River. The most important is the effect of wind & rain on the water clarity. Stretches of heavy SW/W winds on Lake Erie will muddy up the river making fishing very tough. Therefore its critical to watch the conditions & take advantage of the "good times. On years when Lake Erie freezes in the east end, it will keep the water clean throughout winter. This is just a short, brief synopsis. Many TV shows & articles have been done over the years that are much more in depth. The Niagara river is a world class fishery that can be very productive as one learns it. Come on in the shop & we would love to chat more with you & show you some things #grimsbytackle #weknowfishing #weareyourtackleshop

It is with a heavy hearts and sadness that we have learned of the passing of one of our very own Steve Anderson (Slim). At 7am this morning his hard fought battle with cancer came to an end with family by his side. He now rests easy with no more pain and suffering. Until we meet again...Tight Lines #fuckcancer
