As 2020 draws to a close, this is our challenge to you: celebrate thanks every day. Bannock is also known as fry bread or Indian bread. This type of bread is found throughout North American cuisine, and was influenced by European settlers. Prior to contact, bannock was made using available resources such as flour made from indigenous grain roots, tree sap and leavening agents such as lichens. Later on, wheat flour and baking powder replaced these ingredients and bannock began to be made in the Scottish style - hence adopting the Scottish name. Our in house ...baker, Thea, has a secret bannock recipe that has made it one of our most popular selling food items. She will be making a fresh batch of bannock (and her newest creation, bannock donuts!) tomorrow for 'Bringing Home the Bannock'. Order online by 3pm Friday to have it delivered or come and collect from the Thunderbird Café. Order on our website: slcc.ca

October 4: today we stand in solidarity with the women and girls who are absent from our lives. Today we wear masks bearing a red handprint to support our families, friends, and communities who continue to endure the pain of loss. In Canada, Indigenous women and girls are three times more likely to experience violence and six more times likely to be murdered. How can you help?... Denounce and speak out against violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people Decolonize by learning the true history of Canada and Indigenous history in your local area Develop knowledge and read the final report Using what you have learned and some of the resources suggested, become a strong ally Help hold all governments accountable to act on the calls for justice The red handprint is a symbol of violence that affects indigenous women and girls.
