On the topic of naps this week!! We know napping to be a good thing, especially for healthy growth and development. We need to take into context the age of the child, realistic goals and expectations. We dont need to be told what happens when a baby or toddler misses a nap. The irritability, whining or tantrums begin to pile up, causing havoc and tension in a household. So you ask yourself well okay how do we get great naps? How do we help them? ... What can we as the parent do? The best advice I have for all parents with a newborn, baby, or toddler is consistency and realistic goals. Newborns will have short awake times and short naps (we want to focus on eating) Infants will start adjusting to longer awake times and longer naps (ideally 60 minutes plus). Toddlers need a solid afternoon routine with boundaries to ensure they go for the quiet time or nap! Take the time to create a plan one that you and your partner or child care provider can follow. Seek out advice or help. Understand age appropriate awake times and safe sleep environments. After you have done this give the nap time, naps can take weeks to regulate and thats okay still struggling with naps? Reach out, sometimes all we need is a bit of Guidance or advice. Sleeping 12 hours!!! But wait... what does that actually mean? Does it mean sleeping 7pm-7am? Maybe it means sleeping 6pm-6am.... Or maybe it looks like this... Let them make some choices! Toddlers are known for stalling at bedtime, so why not help them. Why not set them up for success!!! For example Put out two books, and say you can choose ONE book. Lay out two pairs of pyjamas and say again you pick can which pair you like! They also always need water, have it in the room before they even ask!! With just a small amount of course and say look there is one last sip just for you ... Once you tuck them in ADD in I am so proud of you, bedtime went really good tonight. Followed by the usual I love you good night! Toddlers need praise, need to feel involved, when we guide them and support them, they can do amazing things!!! Parents and caregivers can help create a safe sleep area for babies by taking the following steps: * Place your baby on his or her back for all sleep timesnaps and at night. * Use a firm, flat sleep surface. * Keep soft bedding such as large blankets, pillows, bumper pads. * Find a safe room, one that you can either see your child with the use of a video monitor or close to where you are.... * Ensure no items are close by that could fall on your child while sleeping. * Pick a safe temperature, not too hot or too cold!! 19-21 degrees is a perfect temperature. * Use of swaddle or sleep sack for proper warmth. * Last enjoy the quiet time, knowing your child is sleeping safely!! Let them take the lead If you truly watch your new bundle of joy they will show you what they need from the moment they are born. From being held and sooth by your warmth, to needing to be fed and so much more. They also try to tell us when they need sleep, if we pay attention. The signs yes at times are a little harder to read but they are always there. When we watch we see excessive eye rubbing, crying, back arching, fussy, excessive sucking and more...... When very young they are often labeled as colic or fussy babies... and with age they get even harder labels such as spoiled, defiant and more. Forcing parents to use the line often oh they are just tired. when what all our children truly need is sleep. Hi Want to know my bedtime routine? My mom does the same thing every night, since I was about 5 weeks old!! We dont consider bedtime till around 9/930pm ( it use to be 10/1030) - First Im fed in the living room ... - Then its bath time or a quick wipe down and bum change - Fresh diaper, pjs, swaddle - Fed again (my dad feeds me pumped milk) it allows us to have time together since he works all day. - Then Im put in my bassinet next to my parents bed - Sometimes I am awake and sometimes Im already asleep!! - If I need my soother my mom offers it to me!! She says I get to keep my soother until Im 3.5-4 months!! - I then sleep 5-7 hours I wake up and have a big feed. - No diaper change unless I - I will then sleep another 3-4 hours, eat and start my day if its after 8 am!! The sweet sleeping face of a child who just had a 45 minute melt down over a broken boat.... Spencer got to pick out a small boat toy at the dollar store, 20 minutes later he broke it... while sitting in his car seat. I took the boat as it was now broken and was broken intentionally. We then cried and screamed over the boat... I tried to have patience and understanding... but I couldnt wrap my head around what he didnt get it... it was broken.. I may have then thrown the... broken boat out the window.. sorry for littering.. that obviously made the melt down worse... after finally pulling over and having a minute to calm down outside the truck he passed out once back in his seat. Being three is exhausting.. well parenting one is. I guess Ill try to have patience tomorrow! Has your once great sleeper suddenly started screaming at bedtime, waking up at night, or fighting naps? Your baby or child may be going through a developmental change!! Thats right you heard me a change not a regression!!! I hate the word regression... we are saying our child has now unlearned Such a great skill of being able to sleep independently!! The key to understanding what may be going on is to uncover what is causing the sleep change. Is it illness or teething pa...in, have we just learned to roll over or sit up. Are we on the verge of crawling, standing or walking? If you can answer YES to any of the above scenarios then these night time wake ups, harder bed times and short naps will pass! If your child has a solid sleep foundation and is typically a great sleeper, these bumps in the road wont last long! The deciding factor will be how we as the parent respond during these changes, did we maintain our expectations or are we responding to our baby or child creating new sleep habits or associations that you cant sustain long-term? Sometimes we need to sit back and take a look at what is happening, and how can we help them. Developmental changes or teething or illness should never cause weeks of poor sleep!! At most we should pass through the storm in 3-5 days!!
