Health Canada advice on infant sleep positions has changed greatly over the last 20 years. In the past parents were told to always place their infants on their sides to sleep, then the advice shifted to stomach. Current Health Canada advice is to always place your child on their back to sleep. There are a few exceptions to this rule! Tummy Time! This is should be done everyday by placing your infant on their belly, gradually increasing the amount of time in this position.... If your child falls asleep during tummy time, it is ok as long as you are ALWAYS supervising. Some infants will become tummy sleepers later in infancy, my daughter began sleeping on her stomach at 7 months old, it worried me a lot. My family Doctor assured me that as long as your baby can roll over safely and you always place your infant on their backs initially to sleep, tummy sleeping at this point is ok. This is another reason why Health Canada advises parents to stop swaddling their infants once they can roll over.
