Fiber Today I want to talk about Fiber and how important it is in weight management. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the enzymes can't break down, therefore it is not digested by the body. It helps regulate how the body’s uses sugars, helping to feel satiated longer, lower cholesterol and keep blood sugar stable.... There are two types of Fiber, Soluble and Insoluble. Soluble Fiber absorbs water and helps lowering cholesterol and glucose levels. Foods containing soluble Fiber are oatmeal, nuts, beans, apples, blueberries. Insoluble Fiber does not dissolve in water and helps move food trough the digestive system, helping with softer stools, regularity and preventing constipation. It is found in the seeds and skins of fruits and vegetables (avoid peeling them) as well as whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole grains, cucumbers and tomatoes. Most people don't get enough Fiber in their diets. According to the Institute of Medicine, women should get 25g of Fiber per day and men need 38g per day. This is why is so important to read labels to keep track of your daily intake. Here we leave you with some tips to help you increase your Fiber intake: * Eat whole fruits instead of drinking fruit juices. This way you will be getting all that insoluble Fiber that helps you control hunger. * Replace white rice, bread, and pasta with brown rice and whole grain products. * Always read labels and list of ingredients and look for whole grains within the first three ingredients. * Snack on raw vegetables such as carrots and celery with homemade hummus to increase your protein intake. * Include more legumes and beans on your diet. Add them to chilis and soups. At Slender Meals we use whole grains, include beans and legumes in our recipes and we don't peel our veggies, that's the reason you see potatoes and carrots with their skin, we want to make sure you won't miss on your insoluble Fiber! Happy New Year followers! So we had a great time off with family and friends, enjoying all the delicious food and drinks and celebrating life, but now we are back on track, working towards all our goals being healthy one of them! Here we leave you with a few tips that will help you get back on track! 1. Plan ahead and organize all your meals for the next day/week. When you are organized you won't feel the need to indulge in no so healthy foods. 2. Pack your day with veggies! ...They will give you fibre (makes you feel fuller longer), vitamins, minerals and antioxidants so important to get that "detox" that you are looking for. Choose all colours: tomatoes, carrots, squash, zucchini, bell peppers, broccoli, beets, radishes and the list goes on and on. 3. Don't forget your water! Stay away from sugary drinks such as sodas, beverages and juices. Choose a fruit over a juice. If you find drinking water boring add some fruits such as mandarines, oranges, lemon, raspberries, etc and some herbs such as rosemary, mint and basil. Choose a nice 1 L bottle and fill it twice, challenge yourself to drink it all and even invite some friends to join you. 4. Dedicate at least 30 minutes to move your body. Choose an activity that you enjoy and that you can commit to. When you exercise you release endorphins, happy hormones that will make you feel, well, HAPPY! Make it a challenge or competition with some friends, it will make you accountable. Try doing this for 21 continuos days and it will become an habit. 5. Take pictures and measurements now, it will make you feel so good when you reach your goal! Choose an outfit that doesn't fit anymore, put it somewhere you can see it everyday and every once in a while try it on, it will keep you motivated. Visualize yourself in this outfit. Do you want to wear it for Spring Break, Stampede, maybe a sunny warm vacation? 6.
