Today is World Trivia Day. Here are a few fun dental trivia points to share with your kids. Guess what the hardest material in your whole body is? It’s the enamel (the outer surface) of your teeth! Did you know... Your mouth produces two swimming pools-worth of drool in your lifetime! That’s a hefty 25,000 quarts of saliva. Only two thirds of a tooth’s length is actually visible above the gum line. There’s a whole other third of a tooth hiding underneath your gums! Giraffes only have bottom teeth. #worldtrivaday #nationaltriviaday #smiletown #smiletowndentistry #pediatricsedation #kidsdentist #kidsteeth #dentist #pediatricdentist #cambridge #kitchener #waterloo

How Can Parents Prevent Tooth Decay? While genetic factors can also play a role in the development of tooth decay in children, these factors tend to play less of a role in the majority of children and are much more out of your control. How Parents Can Prevent Tooth Decay in Children... Feed Your Child a Healthy Diet The average parent or caregiver out there likely knows that a healthy and balanced diet that has little junk and candy is important for dental health (and health in general). However, there are many foods out there that might take you by surprise in terms of how bad they can be for your children’s dental health. A few examples here include natural sugars contained in sugar-free fruit juices and milk. Natural sugars have the same effect on teeth that refined sugar does! So, consider replacing juice and milk with water if your children tend to drink these beverages between meals. Also be mindful of hidden sugars as well, both natural and refined. Ketchup, for example, contains a lot of sugar, as do a lot of packaged oatmeals, yogurt and crackers. Fruit leather is another common healthy snack that should also be minimized (it is both sugary and sticky, which can lead to cavities). We have talked about what a healthy diet looks when it comes to your child’s dental health, which you can read here. Proper Oral Hygiene Most parents and caregivers know the importance of daily brushing (both morning and night) and flossing. However, it is not uncommon for some parents and caregivers to make a couple of mistakes. The first is that children need help brushing their teeth until they can hand write their own name. This comes as a surprise to many parents! The second is that children need to visit the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears. Their first dental visit should be by their first birthday at the very latest. This comes directly from the Canadian Dental Association. #dentaltips #kidsteeth #smiletown #smiletowndentistry #smiletownwaterloo #smiletowncambridge #kidsdentistry #justkidsdentistry #pediatricsedation #pediatricdentist

Signs Your Toddler Has A Dental Emergency Knowing what is considered a dental emergency can mean the difference between a quick recovery or risking long-term damage to your child’s teeth. Here are some signs your toddler has a dental emergency: If a Baby Tooth Has Been Knocked Out... Your child’s tooth being knocked out is an easy one. But it typically isn’t as much of a cause for concern as many would think (that being said, it’s still considered a dental emergency). Although the tooth cannot be reinserted. Their adult tooth will grow and fill in the gap over time. Tooth Pain Chronic tooth pain is another clear giveaway that your toddler is having a dental emergency. Depending on the source of the pain, a dentist should be able to solve the problem with a pulp treatment, a filling, or by extracting the baby tooth. Swelling and Bleeding of the Gums Your child’s gums should always be pink. If the gums appear red and/or bleeding, then you should book a dentist appointment. You should also check their chin and neck for swelling, which would indicate they have an infection. Weight Loss and No Appetite A toddler may be unable to clearly communicate their pain. Because of this, it is not uncommon in a dental emergency for a toddler to stop eating or at least lose their appetite. However, if they’re visibly in discomfort when they eat for more than a day, then a visit to the dentist’s office is still recommended. Fever or Sickness At first, a fever may not seem unusual if they’re getting over a cold. Although a fever could also be the sign of a mouth infection spreading. This too is an emergency. #dentaltips #kidsteeth #smiletown #smiletowndentistry #smiletownwaterloo #smiletowncambridge #kidsdentistry #justkidsdentistry #pediatricsedation #pediatricdentist

Will Our Child Feel Pain After Dental Treatment Is Completed? As parents, naturally you want your child to avoid pain. If your child is undergoing dental treatment, you may be wondering if he or she will experience any pain after the dental treatment is completed. Know that pain management, however, is always a priority for dentists. Dental Treatment Pain In Children... First and foremost, whether your child experiences pain after dental treatment depends on the type of treatment your child is undergoing. Take a look at some common examples below. Will My Child Feel Pain After Dental Treatment Is Completed? Teeth Fillings Your child will typically not have a lot of pain after teeth fillings, but some sensitivity is certainly normal, as is a bit of swelling. However, neither should last any longer than two days at most. During this time, you can give your child soft foods until the sensitivity decreases. Also limit the use of straws and any other sucking motion. Also limit heavy activity both on the day of the filling and the day after. As far as pain is concerned, you can administer children’s acetaminophen as prescribed by your dentist. During this time, it is important to monitor your child’s sensitivity and swelling. If either persists after two days, contact your dentist. Prolonged swelling can indicate an allergy to anaesthesia, while prolonged sensitivity can indicate that your child may require a bite adjustment. Extractions (Teeth Removal) After tooth extraction, a child can feel a bit of soreness on the second or third day after their procedure, along with a stiff jaw. Swelling is also common. On the first day, your child will typically still feel the effects of the local anaesthetic. Any pain that is felt after this period, however, can be relieved by prescription-strength or over-the-counter medication as prescribed and/or directed by your dentist. Keep in in mind that if your child’s pain gets worse 3 to 5 days after surgery, you should contact your dentist as this may indicate a problem. Always follow your dentist’s postoperative care instructions carefully. During this period, you will want to stop your child from vigorously rinsing their mouth and drinking through straws as this can cause a blood clot. Your child should also eat soft foods for up to a week. Always follow your dentist’s postoperative care instructions for best results. Smile Town is a children’s dental clinic dedicated to making your child’s dental experience positive and fun. #dentaltips #kidsteeth #smiletown #smiletowndentistry #smiletownwaterloo #smiletowncambridge #kidsdentistry #justkidsdentistry #pediatricsedation #pediatricdentist

What Sugar Does to Baby Teeth Kids would happily eat sugar every meal if they had the chance, but their teeth won’t be smiling when decay and cavities take over. Sugary sweets could land your child in the dentist’s chair for something other than routine care. Many parents don’t understand the detrimental effects that excessive sweets can have on your child’s baby teeth. The Cause of Cavities... Once your child eats those suckers and chocolate, the bacteria produce acid, which attacks and breaks down your child’s tooth enamel. High levels of sugar can be found in fruit drinks or fruits, and even lurking in everyday foods. According to the American Dental Association, a sweetened beverage can attack one’s teeth for over 20 minutes, causing more decay which leads to cavities. Continuous, prolonged exposure to sugar is also problematic. Drinking pop all day slowly is even worse. Oral Care: Think Ahead You may assume that since baby teeth will fall out, that you don’t need to worry about things like candy. Let them eat it for every meal, you say. The lack of implementing better oral care habits at a young age could actually harm to their health in the future. They need to practice healthy eating habits in order to continue good oral care once their permanent teeth are in. Some baby molars don’t fall out until children reach their teenage years, meaning they need to take care of them for years before adult teeth come in so their mouths don’t fill up with tooth decay. How to Prevent Cavities 1. Brush, floss, use a fluoride toothpaste as soon as teeth appear 2. You can’t avoid sugar in today’s diet. Limit the daily exposure to sugar by not allowing your child to drink all day from a bottle or sippy cup. 3. See the dentist no later than one year of age, and then every 6 months for a cleaning and check up. #dentaltips #kidsteeth #smiletown #smiletowndentistry #smiletownwaterloo #smiletowncambridge #kidsdentistry #justkidsdentistry #pediatricsedation #pediatricdentist
