Update ! Our "Queen of the Night" tulip has finally bloomed. It doesn't look as dark as the display picture buts it quite beautiful. Our parrot tulip has also started to bloom, we found that the type of parrot tulip we got seems to be shorter and blooms later then the rest. They are absolutely beautiful! We are already planning our tulip experiments for next year. We are hoping to have flowers earlier in the season so that we can be open sooner.

Alright let's talk about mulch! It's beautiful outside and we all wanna get out and do our gardens right ?! We like to use mulch in between and around our perennial beds. But it's best to wait on the mulch! The soil is still fairly cold, it's best to wait a few weeks until the soil warms up to put your mulch down. If you put it on now it will take the soil longer to warm up and could stunt the growth of your plants. ... When we do mulch, we line the ground with cardboard, then cover with mulch. The cardboard acts like a weed barrier until it degrades into the soil. Remember the recommended thickness is 2-4 inches !

We took full advantage of today and did some planting! We planted over 250 strawberry plants and added 50 more Raspberry bushes to our berry patch. We are hoping the nice weather is here to stay, so we can jump into our big plans for the garden this year !

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! As many of you know, we are officially closed for the season. This is a perfect time to reflect on our season, and the overwhelming feeling is thankfulness. Thank you to all of the people who supported us this year. Thank you to all of our regulars that have made us part of your new routine. ... Thank you to our local producers and fellow farmers who worked with us to provide a variety of fresh produce every week. Thank you to our land, sun and soil, for providing us with such plenty. Thank you to our family and friends who have helped us along the way. Looking forward to next year!

As the 2020 growing season draws to a close we are reflecting on Smokey Hollow’s first season at dedicated farmgate sales. We have learned so much and enjoyed every minute! Already we have bigger/better plans for next year. It has been great to get acquainted with some of our customers albeit from a distance. 2020 has meant that we have been hesitant to approach unless asked to. But the smiles and waves bridged the distance rather well. Although the growing season was drama...tically cut short a couple of weeks ago because of the heavy frost we have been proud of what we could grow and offer to our customers. We have also been glad to work with other local producers to provide a more varied produce and plant offering. Next week will be our last weekend of sales we will use the time from Thanksgiving to snowfall to put the garden to bed and begin our plans for next season. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year and wish you all a safe and secure winter.
