Unfortunately these frigid cold temperatures mean lessons are cancelled today. Looking at the forecast we are expecting a couple days of horribly cold temperatures, which means our staff are working longer than normal hours in the cold to ensure the health & well being of the horses. As such, we will be cancelling lessons for this week & resuming lessons the week of February 15th. Stay warm out there, we miss you all so very much and are looking forward to getting back in the saddle!!!!!

In negative temperatures when riding in the arena we generally have heaters running to take the chill out of the air. There is more to it than just the riders comfort, it is also to protect the horses lungs. "Normally, cold air shouldn’t be a problem for a heathy horse, at rest, walk or even trot to some extent. Evolution has ensured that when horses breathe in through their nose, even cold air, which has a low moisture content, is warmed and humidified by the upper respir...atory tract before it reaches the lungs. However, when a horse is forced to exert himself, he inhales quickly and deeply, and the body doesn’t have time to warm the cold air. The thin layer of fluid that lines the airways evaporates faster than it can be replaced, effectively drying them out, causing inflammation and constriction. An increase in mucous production and thickness further compounds airway restriction. All this potentially damages lung tissues or creates more problems in already compromised respiratory tracts. The impairment may lead to chronic breathing issues." Those in our winter riding programs please watch for updates on whether we will be running or not, it is dependent on the outside temperatures. Our priority is keeping our riders and horses safe & healthy!

Yesterday announcement from the Alberta Government is not what we wanted to hear, unfortunately it means that all lessons need to be pushed back. As it stands at the moment lesson programs will resume January 25th unless another health restriction is put into place. Clinics prior to January 25th will be rescheduled. We appreciate your patience as we coordinate everything.

SMS Ranch is a private boarding, training, and breeding Ranch located in Tofield Alberta. Do you have an interest in learning more about horse breeding programs? SMS Ranch has 9 Stallions Standing at the Ranch for breeding in 2021 with more than 30 mares booked in for breeding. Stallion breeds booked to stand at the Ranch include Quarter Horse, Clydesdale & Canadians. In 2020, SMS Ranch foaled out 19 mares who all had healthy foals. Some minor complications handled eff...iciently by our knowledgeable staff. For 2021 there are currently more than 20 mares booked in for foaling services. Our foaling stalls all have live feed surveillance cameras. Working student position is not a paid position, however you will gain experience in all aspects of our foaling & breeding operation. The ideal candidate will have horse experience, work well on a team, take direction, hard working & dedicated, detail orientated, observant and have a desire to learn. You can expect to assist in daily care of mares, foals & stallions. This includes feeding, turn out, mucking stalls, and handling. You will gain experience in breeding practices for live cover and artificial insemination. You will gain experience in monitoring mares and foaling. You will gain experience in handling of foals & halter training. Educational certifications & training opportunities will also be available to the perfect candidate.

Good Afternoon, The Ranch lesson programs will continue as usual. We have confirmed that we are allowed to continue riding lessons until further notice. Our region is not enhanced or "purple". That being said we will be continuing with some of our protocols and adding some more: ... * as much as we love the social aspect of the barn we need to refrain from this at the moment. * masks are mandatory indoor, unless you are by yourself. * please only touch what you need too ;) * we will be adding a sign in/out binder as of the 27th that will require you to sign in and out whenever you are at the barn. This is to aid in contact tracing if required. Even if you just pop in and out you MUST sign in/out * absolutely no visitors!!!! Owners/Boarders, Leasors, students & their parent only. * if anyone in your household is sick or required to quarantine because of close contact you may NOT attend the barn. Covid-19 Update As regulations change our policies will also need to change. Beaver County is not under any additional restrictions, that being said we will be increasing our precautions. As of this morning there is only 1 active case in Beaver County, keep up the diligent precautions so that we can continue to have a release and tend to our own mental health & the mental health of our children. Lesson programs, clinics and competitions are scheduled to continue at this ti...me. Riding is an individual activity, be responsible and respect social distancing. * No unannounced visitors to the barn, please schedule appointments. * when social distancing is not possible, please wear a mask * spectators are not allowed, youth may have guardian (and siblings) present but please remain in the lounge only. The barns are not to be wandered around in. * competition days will run the same in that scheduled walk through times will be announced the day prior. Entry through side door of arena. Complete your run and depart, no spectating.
