FAQ: #BellLetsTalkDay is all about furthering conversations about mental health, where are these conversations happening at SMU? Great question! They are happening in lots of places. First, the counselling centre and peer support offer a variety of mental-health informing and promoting events, such as the biweekly Self-Care Break. Check out https://www.smu.ca/campus-life/student-workshops.html to sign up!... Another important conversation happens in the ManMade focus group aimed at promoting men’s mental health (a frequently overlooked topic) and combating toxic masculinity. You can get CCR credits for participating in the 4 sessions, so email [email protected] to sign-up for this semester’s series! Finally, there is the mental health advocates program where YOU can learn more about how to promote your own mental health and support others to help keep these conversations going! Need someone to talk to ASAP? Here is another great resource, available for free for students. When we reached out to this textline, we were put in touch with a trained crisis responder within minutes we hope we can stress how easy it was to reach out and how helpful it was to discuss an issue we were facing with them! As students, due to our busy schedules it can be difficult to keep a regular sleep routine, but maintaining a consistent schedule is greatly beneficial for both your physical and mental health. If you find it difficult to keep a regular sleep routine, try adding in specific things to do before going to bed. These can be as simple as washing your face with water or listening to a relaxing podcast. To learn more ways to enhance your sleep hygiene, check out our Sleep Hygiene: ...Skills to Build a Better Sleep Workshop on Tuesday, February 2nd from 2:30-3:30pm via Zoom! If you are worried about the mental health of a relative or friend, have an open conversation with them. Don’t be afraid to ask them directly how they are feeling. Being direct can help foster feelings of safety and trust and help them open up. If they identify that they would like to seek support for their mental health, you could do the following things: 1. Listen to them and ask how you can help 2. Help them book an appointment with a Counsellor if they are interested... 3. Assist them in finding resources that will work for them Resources for students: HealthyMindsNS: Free, confidential mental health resources. Changing around your space is a great way to practice self-care! Adding a new decoration or changing the spot where your desk used to be are simple, yet effective ways to switch things up. Arranging things in a way that works best for you can even help boost productivity! #SelfCareTips #BellLetsTalk
