Pre-med and life sciences students at Queen's University showed their community what motivated, passionate students are able to accomplish when they work towards a common goal: to save lives. Every three minutes a child is born with cleft lip, cleft palate, or both. This is significant, especially when you consider that five billion people worldwide lack access to safe, affordable and timely surgical care. As a result of their incredible medical volunteers and corporate par...tners, Operation Smile can provide a surgery to a child born with a cleft condition for as little as $240. In order to provide surgeries to these children, the Queen’s students hosted fundraisers including a bottle drive, coffee and dog therapy session, bake sales and many more. Previous Event Coordinator for the group and incoming co-president, Sierra Proud, was motivated to fund raise through her previous experience volunteering on an Operation Smile medical mission with her mother, Debbie Potter, who was born with a cleft lip. In February 2019, the duo got to witness a medical mission first hand, as well as the changing surgeries delivered to children born with cleft conditions. This experience was something that Proud was really passionate about sharing at Queen’s, to motivate the group to fund these life-changing surgeries. She wanted to educate her peers and tell the stories of the children she met on her missions. Sierra was thankful to see how smiles can change lives firsthand, seeing the patient’s reactions to themselves after the surgery....they are in disbelief, it was really powerful to see. The group raised enough funds to provide three life-changing surgeries to children born with cleft conditions. If you would like to join these student leaders in sharing smiles to children born with cleft conditions, please visit longestdayofsmiles.ca or text SMILE to 45678 to donate $10, and the first $50,000 raised in June will be matched by generous donor.
