Six Nations Internet Towers Project is a direct response to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. Many community members are trying to adapt to different learning and... work environments, many having to work and learn from home. The current Wi-Fi Coverage in Six Nations is 68%. This project will enhance the Wi-Fi Coverage to 98%! We've heard your comments and want community members to know that we are compiling weekly Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Sheets that will be posted every Friday. To submit comments please email: [email protected] Or visit http://www.sixnations.ca/SNInternetTowersProject/ for more info. - - - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS INTERNET TOWERS PROJECT GENERAL INFORMATION QUESTIONS 1) How is the project funded? The Internet Towers Project is made possible by various financial contributions from: Two Rivers, Six Nations of the Grand River Economic Development Trust, Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council, and Xplornet. 2) Why did the bid for the service provider not go to general public? Xplornet Communications Inc. acquired the incumbent wireless service provider (Silo Wireless). Silo held a contractual arrangement to provide wireless services, this has now transitioned to Xplornet. 3) Has SNGR already approved an agreement with Xplornet? Have they committed to allow Xplornet exclusivity on the top 30 feet again? The agreement provides Xplornet with preferential treatment to place their equipment. They pay monthly fees for this access. 4) Why is work starting before the community consultations take place? The objective in getting work started quickly is to improve internet access for the entire community. 5) How will council decide if the community has approved the project if they can’t get online to participate? Council has decided to pursue the project, the objective is to now share what the decision means for the community. The communication plan includes mail outs and newspaper advertisements which are intended to reach households that are not online. 6) When is construction slated to begin and be completed by? Geotechnical construction began Thursday November 12, 2020. The project is aimed to be completed by February 2021. LAND & LOCATION RELATED QUESTIONS 7) The existing beavers corner tower and property on which it is built is privately owned. Will this new tower be built on the same property and if so, what is the nature of the agreement with the property owner? The plan is not to rebuild on the existing tower site (since it is privately owned), as a result Lands & Membership have identified land across the street which is land held by the Band. This is the new location for 'Beavers Corner'. 8) What is the current agreement with Six Nations cable regarding the expansion of their lines? This project is not a cable or fiber build it is an expansion of the existing wireless network only. 9) Where are the towers going to be placed? Three of the current existing towers will be replaced, in addition, construction of three new towers will be in the areas of Sixty-Nine Corners, Stoneridge, and Beavers Corner. See a map of the locations of new and existing towers by visiting http://www.sixnations.ca/SNInternetTowersProject/ INFRASTRUCTURE & TECHNOLOGY RELATED QUESTIONS 10) Will these new towers be 5G? The equipment is 4G but is 5G ready. In the Safety Code 6 document (found on http://www.sixnations.ca/SNInternetTowersProject/ ) Xplornet must adhere to emission standards as set out by the Government. The frequencies we use today are already deployed and have been used for many years, including the incumbent providers. Xplornet treats safety and standards seriously and will hold themselves accountable to every degree. XPLORNET RELATED QUESTIONS 11) What happened to the company council had a contract with? Silo was acquired by Xplornet in February 2020. 12) What is the proposed average speed with the new towers? Xplornet will offer a variety of packages at different price and speed levels, with the highest up to 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) upload and 3 Mbps download, with unlimited data. 13) Would this upgrade automatically be available to existing Xplornet customers? Or is there a process to follow to be a part of this upgrade Current customers who wish to upgrade should contact Xplornet at 1-866-841-6001. 14) Will there be unlimited data plans? Xplornet offers unlimited data packages on its LTE fixed wireless network, including the towers on Six Nations territory. 15) Will Xplornet be able to offer more than 100gb with the new towers? Xplornet has data packages available at a variety of sizes and prices, including unlimited data. 16) Will the upgrade of towers allow for reduced costing to Xplornet Customers or community members? Xplornet’s continuously evolving network is delivering faster speeds and more data for the monthly fee customers pay. With their latest offering of speeds up to 50 Mbps, Xplornet has doubled the speed available on their fastest package, while maintaining a consistent price. 17) How is Xplornet going to accommodate for all the problems current customers are already having? Xplornet has been working to integrate Silo’s network since the summer. This is a complex process and challenges were expected. Xplornet is working to resolve the issues faced by customers transitioning from Silo’s network and is accelerating maintenance and upgrade work to ensure continued high-quality service. The deployment of new towers on Six Nations territory is an important part of these upgrades and will provide enhanced service for customers on the territory. HEALTH RELATED QUESTIONS 18) What are the health concerns or risks to Six Nations community members? The government of Canada (Health Canada) issues and maintains the guidelines for Radio Frequency limits that are safe to the public. Safety Code 6 addressed all radio frequencies from 3KHz to 300 GHz. ISED mandates that all operators run Safety Code 6 study (analysis and or measurements) to ensure no exposure to harmful radio signals to any person likely to be near or close proximity of the radios. The risk in any tower that is over 15m starts to go to almost to zero (non existent) as the radios are installed at very high attachment height compared to human heights (evaluated at 2 meters). With a tower being 30-60 meter high, it poses no risk to any human walking or living nearby. 19) What is the possible exposure risk? The risk in any tower that is over 15m starts to go to almost to zero (non existent) above that height. Towers can range up to 90 metres tall. The new towers being build are 45m meaning there is 0 exposure risk to community members.
