Medicinal mushrooms have been used in Eastern medicine for thousands of years. A few things that they all have in common is that they're high in antioxidants, help reduce inflammation and support the immune system. In this week's video, I'll be talking about one specific type of mushroom that has superior benefits for brain health, which helps to improve memory, cognition and nerve health. - - - - - Notes: - Studies have found that lions mane has special compounds that can ...stimulate the growth of brain cells. - Its unique properties promote the production of nerve growth factor (NFG) and myelin, which is the insulating covering around our nerves. Both nerve growth factor and myelin are crucial to brain health and healthy nerve function. This makes Lions mane a serious Brian food. - Lions Mane also contains compounds such as beta-glucans, which are responsible for anti-tumor growth, immuno-modulating antioxidants and neuro-protective chemicals. - Studies have found has been shown to reduce symptoms of memory loss, as well as prevent neuronal damage. - Other studies have found that lions mane extract can help regenerate brain cells and improve the functioning of the hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible for processing memories and emotional responses. - Lions mane extract might also help reduce the severity of brain damage after a stroke. - In one study, lions mane mushroom given to rats immediately after a stroke helped decrease inflammation and reduce the size of stroke-related brain injury by 44%. ============ STUDIES/SOURCES Neurotrophic Properties of the Lion's Mane Medicinal Mushroom, Hericium Erinaceus (Higher Basidiomycetes) From Malaysia https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24266378/ The Influence of Hericium Erinaceus Extract on Myelination Process medicinal mushrooms also improve brain health and cognition and increase energy and stamina. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12675022/ The Neuroprotective Properties of Hericium erinaceus in Glutamate-Damaged Differentiated PC12 Cells and an Alzheimers Disease Mouse Model https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5133811/ Reduction of Depression and Anxiety by 4 Weeks Hericium Erinaceus Intake https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20834180/

Elderberry syrup is now back in stock! But we only have a limited supply. Please let us know if you need one put aside for you. Elderberries contain a compound that immobilizes the flu virus. The unique phytochemicals found in elderberries can block a virus from entering, or even attaching to healthy cells when taken preventatively. Even if a virus has already taken hold, the compound prevents the virus from replicating.... . In one placebo-controlled, double-blind study conducted by virologist Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, 93.3% of the people taking an elderberry preparation reported significant improvement in influenza symptoms within 2 days of starting it, compared with the 6 days it took for the placebo group to see improvement. . . . . . . . COVID-19 can cause more severe symptoms and complications in some people living with diabetes. It's important to minimize this risk by being proactive with your prevention strategies. - - - - - The International Diabetes Foundation says that when those with diabetes develop a viral infection of any kind (including COVID-19), it can be harder to treat for two reasons: 1) The person's immune system is compromised, making it harder for their body to fight off the virus and can... lead to a longer recovery period; and 2) viruses may thrive in environments with elevated blood glucose levels. - - - - - Those with diabetes also have heightened levels of inflammation throughout their bodies, which can put those with diabetes at a heightened risk. If you have a viral infection, that can turn into pneumonia easier because diabetes is an inflammatory disease. It's also important to note that, when a person has diabetes, episodes of stress, like a viral infection, can increase blood sugar levels, which can also lead to complications. - - - - - - Sick Day Rules for People with Diabetes - * Keep hydrated * Monitor your blood glucose * Monitor your temperature * If you are on insulin, also monitor your ketone bodies * Maintain open communication with your primary care provider and diabetes care team. They are an excellent resource if you have questions or concerns about your personal health management. * Be aware of the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, as effective blood glucose management can become a challenge when sick - - - - - HOLISTIC NUTRITION TIPS * Eat small frequent meals, or have protein-rich, high fiber snacks in-between meals to help keep blood sugar balanced. * Be mindful of carbohydrate intake. Grains and starches digest and metabolize into glucose (sugar), which can be a good source of energy for those with active lifestyles. But if you are not active enough to burn these sugars as fuel, they can spike the blood sugar. Grains can also be inflammatory for some people, which can raise cortisol (a stress hormone), and has been linked to increased belly fat. Whole grains are healthier than refined grains because they contain more protein, fiber, and nutrients, but they still raise sugar levels. * Know when to minimize starches and grains by paying attention to blood sugar levels after you eat them as well as how you feel (digestive wise, energy levels, mood). * Prevent dramatic blood sugar shifts by eating low glycemic meals and snacks. I received this question the other day. Q: "If I gargle with apple cider vinegar 2 or 3 times a day, will it protect me from coronavirus if I get exposed to it?" --------------- A: While all varieties of vinegar, including apple cider vinegar, can inhibit the growth of and kill some food-borne pathogenic bacteria due to acetic acid (which contains some antibacterial/ antiviral properties), there is no solid evidence that gargling with it is useful for preventing COVID-19. .... Although vinegars may be used to clean surfaces, they are not as effective a disinfectant such as bleach. It may take as long as 30 minutes of vinegar sitting on a surface (especially if it's a porous one), to be effective. . There is no research to date that has shown cleaning surfaces with vinegar can kill COVID-19 and vinegar is not listed on the EPA's current list of products that meet the agency's criteria for disinfectants for the virus. . Although there are certain health benefits to consuming apple cider vinegar (like improving digestion and heartburn caused by low stomach acid), frequent consumption can lead to tooth enamel loss and has the potential to cause esophageal (throat) burns if not diluted. . Also, do not combine vinegar with bleach or hydrogen peroxide, as this can create toxic vapors. . What about gargling with warm water and salt? . Gargling with warm water and salt might alleviate the symptoms of a sore throat, as its a hypertonic solution, which pulls water from the cells of the throat along with any bacteria thats lodged there. But theres no evidence that there are benefits beyond this. . Doctors in China reported that among a group of 175 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, 39% had low potassium in the blood and another 22% had severe hypokalemia (low potassium). Hypokalemia can cause heart dysfunction, one of the major problems seen in COVID-19. High levels of markers of heart muscle damage were associated with more severe hypokalemia. The presence of underlying disease, particularly hypertension, was associated with the severity of hypokalemia. The apparen...t reason for hypokalemia associated with COVID-19, is that the point of entry into cells for the coronavirus is an enzyme on cell surfaces called angiotensin I converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). This enzyme normally helps regulate blood pressure through effects on sodium and potassium. The virus inactivates ACE2, leading to excretion of potassium. This explanation was further supported by the finding of excess potassium in the urine of patients with hypokalemia, indicating that the potassium loss is mainly through the kidneys (from potassium it normally filters from the blood) as opposed to diarrhea -- which is also common in COVID-19. ~ Signs of Potassium Deficiency~ * Muscle cramping * Weakness * Fatigue * Tingling or numb extremities * Heart palpitations * Passing large amounts of urine or feeling very thirsty most of the time * Low blood pressure * Depression, confusion, irritability ~ Factors That Deplete, Destroy or Compromise Potassium Absorption ~ Dehydration, diarrhea, excessive sweating and laxative abuse are common causes of low potassium levels. - A blood test can check potassium levels, kidney function, glucose, magnesium, calcium and phosphorous if an electrolyte imbalance is suspected. -Potassium is easily obtained from foods, such as bananas, pears, avocados, beans, squash and potatoes. FOOD VALUES Avocado - 1 whole = 1,067 mg Acorn Squash - 1 cup = 896mg Spinach - 1 cup (cooked) = 839mg Salmon - 1/2 filet = 777 mg Yogurt - cup = 573mg Banana - 1 large = 487mg Coconut water - 1 cup = 400mg SOURCES medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.27.20028530v1 consumerlab.com
