Black or White showing on Wednesday Jan. 6th 2021 https://media3-criterionpic-com.ezproxy.mohawkcollege.ca// Black or White is the story of a grandfather (Kevin Costner) who is suddenly left to care for his beloved granddaughter. When her paternal grandmother (Octavia Spencer) seeks custody with the help of her brother (Anthony Mackie), the little girl is torn between two families who love her deeply. With the best intentions at heart, both families fight for what they feel is right and are soon forced to confront their true feelings about race, forgiveness, and understanding. Anchored by an all-star cast and based on real events, the movie is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.

Today's movie: Being Canadian https://media3-criterionpic-com.ezproxy.mohawkcollege.ca// BEING CANADIAN chronicles the real-life quest of Robert Cohen, a proud Canadian, who left his hometown of Calgary and moved to the U.S. to start a career as a TV comedy writer. He started noticing how people outside Canada knew very little about his beloved homeland. After decades of ignorance, insults, and indifference, he decides to do something about it. Rob sets off on an epic personal quest, driving across Canada from East to West, to confirm the country he's been fighting for is still what he remembers. Interwoven with this journey are interviews with a variety of famous Canadians, along with people he meets along the way. His deadline? Midnight on Canada Day, in Vancouver. Imagine 'Sherman's March', but wearing a toque!

On this day, International Transgender Day of Remembrance, let us honour those persons whose lives were lost due to hate and violence. In 1998 Rita Hester, a transgender woman was killed for no reason other than being transgender. Thus in 1999, Gwendolyn Ann Smith Started a vigil to commemorate the death of Rita . This resulted in an annual tradition that honours the lives of those who lost their lives due to anti-transgender hate and violence.
