We thank Julia Zu (right) for her help with membership services in the last five months, and wish her good luck for her new projects. Anabelle Escaffré (left) is taking over the duties this week. Goodbye Julia and Anabelle: welcome!
Who must we thank for the Thanksgiving holiday in our calendar? In Canada, the Parliament selected the second Monday of October in 1957. But it was celebrated in Canada since the early 1800's, sometimes at very different dates. Some historians found evidence that New-France Governor Champlain celebrated it as soon as 1606, inspired by First Nations rituals for harvest in Fall. In Ancient History, this tradition could have been inspired by Hebraic tradition of Soukkhot, mentioned in the Torah. Or by the Greek tradition of Thesmophoria in October, in honour of Demeter, the goddess of Agriculture. That makes a lot of people to thank! :)
The Board of Directors for 2020-2021 elected at the AGM will have two new members: Silvia Xalabardé as Vice President, Evelyna Radoslavova as Secretary. Otherwise the other members renewing are: Stefanie Kennell (President), Angela Fairbank (Registrar), Navdeep Atwal, Stefano Gulmanelli, Tanja Krzman, Khin Tan, Luke Yin. Anyone interested to join as Treasurer?
A little reminder to our members: tomorrow evening is our Zoom AGM. If you are not yet registered, you can still join us at 7 p.m.! All the documents for the meeting are available on our web site (Member Login required).
September 30 is International Translation Day. One might ask why this date? In the catholic calendar, it is the feast of Saint Jerome, who translated the Bible in Latin 16 centuries ago. Funny fact, perhaps his knowledge of Hebrew was approximate, as one of his mistakes had an impact on art. For example, numerous paintings and sculptures of Moses with horns on his head comes from his translation of the word ‘keren’ as grew horns, when it should have been radiated light. But that was a long time ago, way before certification exams! :)
Dear members, save this date in your agenda: October 7 at 7 p.m. STIBC AGM & Elections! Come and take some news about what STIBC is doing to provide more services and more recognition for its members. Perhaps get involved too, on the Board of Directors or in our committees! This year we will use Zoom.
We do not yet have certified interpreters for alien languages, but here is an interesting fact about the movie 'Arrival" (2016). A part of it was based on the work of linguist Kenneth Pike who constructed a language to teach the theory and practice of translation.
