Last week I had the absolute honour of purchasing an entire storage unit full of brand new socks for the purpose of donating them to agencies helping those in need. 5000 went to the Hope Mission in Edmonton, and 10000 went to the Calgary Drop-In Centre. That's a lot of socks. It goes without saying that the DI is an integral part of the support system for those experiencing homelessness in Calgary, and I am so happy that I'm able to help out. Dawn is an absolute treat to d...eal with, and I've had nothing but awesome interactions with the staff and volunteers there over the years. I have the utmost respect and admiration people who devote their lives to helping others, and the DI exemplifies this. If you're looking for a place to support, look no further. Check out their website to learn more about how you can help, and to learn more about the goal to end chronic homelessness. Thank you all for being awesome! See more

In our first year in business, Sock Rocket donated around 300 pairs of socks in total. Today the Calgary Drop-In Centre picked up 10,000 pairs of socks for use in their various program and partnerships. Just want to say thank you to our customers and corporate partners for your support, and say SOCIAL ENTERPRISE WORKS, HUMANS! Please support The DI or another agency local to you this holiday season and into 2021!

Calgary Immigrant Women's Association is a culturally diverse settlement agency that recognizes, responds to, and focuses on the unique concerns and needs of immigrant and refugee women, girls, and their families. I got to drop our donation off in person (from a safe distance of course) and have a chat with some of the leadership team both on the phone and in person. It's so inspiring to talk with people who devote their lives to helping others. In their own words; CIWA’s... uniqueness is based on its gender specific mandate. Over the years, they have continually responded to emerging needs of immigrant women and girls, developed innovative programs, established meaningful partnerships, and have come to be recognized as a provincial and national leader in outcome-based gender-specific settlement services. CIWA offers programs and services that use a holistic approach to support clients in the areas of settlement and integration, literacy and language training, employment support and bridging programs, family violence, parenting, individual counselling, in-home support, civic engagement, health, housing, and community development. All clients have access to childcare and first language support during group sessions and individual appointments. As always, a privilege to help. Thank you CIWA! See more

We recently dropped off 500 pairs of kids socks for the Women's Centre of Calgary, and a few very well dressed volunteers were there to help unload! Women's Centre of Calgary provides women with quick access to basic needs items such as emergency food and personal care supplies. They also offer referrals to other agencies for food, clothing, furniture, housing, health, employment, education, and recreation. I love data and statistics, and their website does not disappoint ...with this. Here are some interesting numbers for you: - Almost 100,000 contacts from women responded to in 2019. - 18,422 times direct assistance with basis needs was provided. - 4,799 basic needs referrals. - 28,878 peer support, info, and follow-up contacts. - 12,624 women welcomed at the centre to make social connections and build community. - 15,801 times women were welcomed at the centre to use computers and office equipment. They also offer the following: - 41% are living or have lived in poverty - 28% are raising child(ren) or have raised child(ren) as a single parent - 34% are experiencing or have experienced a violent relationship - 14% are involved or have been involved in the criminal justice system - 32% have or have had a chronic health issue - 27% are, or have been, homeless or living in a shelter - 40% are unemployed - 11% are underemployed or have precarious employment - 42% are single, divorced, or separated Needless to say, this is a highly important service, and one which I am privileged to be able to have a small part in helping! We've sent 1000 pairs of socks over to the team at Chez Doris in Montreal! Chez Doris provides a daytime shelter 7 days a week for all women in difficulty. The house provides meals, respite, clothing, socio-recreational activities, as well as practical assistance in a secure and accepting environment. It was an absolute pleasure speaking with the team and learning about the unique challenges they are facing during this bizarre year we are having. It's a privilege to be able to help!

Last week we dropped off 400 pairs of kids socks at the Brenda Strafford Centre for them to use in their programming and outreach. The Centre supports people at risk who have experienced family violence to live safely and successfully in our community. They provide a safe housing environment and comprehensive support services so that their clients can live safely in the community upon their departure from the Centre. It's always a humbling experience to visit a "locked" ...program like Brenda Strafford. There are no exterior markings, the building is monitored by camera, and you need to wait outside two sets of locked doors to gain entry. It's a reminder of how important programs like this are for our community. Inside I always find warmth, love, and acceptance. I feel humbled to be able to help, and I always feel like there's so much more I should be doing. Thank you to the team at Brenda Strafford for all that you do! The Brenda Strafford Centre operates from a trauma-informed, strength-based and client-centered approach. They are mindful of the impact that trauma has on the clients that they support and exercise empathy and patience at every opportunity, demonstrating to the families that reside there that they accept where they are and honor their self-identified needs.
