Somersault invites the open water swimming community to consider supporting an important initiative to ensure access by open water swimmers, and all Canadian citizens, to lakes in the National Capital Region that are controlled by the National Capital Commission. In the latter part of the summer the NCC imposed restrictions on open water swimming in Meech Lake. This move was a response to complaints by residents in the area. The NCC has committed to holding a public consultat...ion process over the next several months to find a solution to these issues before the start of the next open water swimming season in 2021. A group of open water swimmers, concerned that access to Meech Lake and other lakes in the region could be in jeopardy, formed the National Capital Open Water Swimmers Alliance (NCOWSA). The goal of the NCOWSA is to liaise with the NCC regarding open water swimming and to prepare written and oral presentations for the upcoming consultations. The NCOWSA committee will represent swimmers and other interested parties to help inform and shape the NCC’s adoption of open water swimming guidelines and best practices. It will be advocating a balanced framework that serves all parties interested in the protection and use of Gatineau Park’s public lakes. NCOWSA has created a Facebook group, website and email address to help reach out to interested parties, as the support of coaches, swimmers and triathletes is vital to this initiative. Please consider supporting NCOWSA and its goal of protecting access to lakes controlled by the National Capital Commission for open water swimming by joining the Facebook group to stay up to date on the issues, current information and progress being made. When NCOWSA participates in the consultations, it will be important to demonstrate significant and widespread support among the swimming and triathlon communities. If NCOWSA is unsuccessful, this may be the thin edge of the wedge that sees swimming in NCC controlled lakes banned for all Canadian citizens, other than Meech Lake for residents only. Please support NCOWSA and feel free to distribute this message throughout your own networks. This weekend would have been the Canadian. We've spent a lot of time this year reflecting about past events as we struggle through this bizarre season. But now it's time to start looking ahead. The Canadian marks the end of the triathlon season. Fall is on its way and it's time to start thinking about next year's goals!

Somersault participants are going rogue! Today would have been the Thousand Islands Triathlon and Duathlon! Somersault athlete Ellen D took to the course and completed her own version of the duathlon event!

Sydenham is one of the smallest events on our calendar.. it’s the hidden gem of Ontario triathlon. Today would have been the perfect day to take the start line on the point to punch over the rollers & to kick up dust on the Cataraqui Trail Pencil this weekend in for 2021.. we’ll see you in Sydenham!

Forewarned. This is not a joyful long weekend post, but today. I am heartbroken COVID-19 has taken away so much from so many. Today it has taken away The E...arly Bird Triathlon Duathlon - Run. The season-opener of the Somersault Event Series. And I am heartbroken. The event itself is small in comparison to everything that is happening in our world right now, but it is a big part me. COVID-19 has taken away my livelihood and the work that I live for. Today it has taken away the joy and energy I always have in anticipation for this long weekend and for the multi-sport season ahead. And I am heartbroken. This is the first Victoria Day long weekend in well over 20 years that I will not be doing what I love hosting an event with something for everyone. from start to finish (Yep.. that’s been one of Somersault’s taglines for years.) And I am heartbroken. Being a Race Director/Organizer has defined me, and today I am not ‘that person’. Usually spent getting up (way too) early and finishing late, today would have been a favourite, for it would have brought together old friends and we would welcome newcomers to our multi-sport community. Today the starter’s horn and finish line celebration have been silenced. And I am heartbroken. So today I reminisce from the days of TBM Sport & Fitness Events to the present. And I am heartbroken. The event was named Austin Wylie Tri (aptly named for our firstborn. because we could do that), the event was part of the Eastern Triathlon Series (ETS), it was renamed The Early Bird, it is now part of the Somersault Event Series. I have added a few photos. Please like and share if you were there or if you remember. Add a photo of your past Early Bird accomplishments, or a photo from today as you swim, bike, or run. Heartbroken in each our own ways, we can be stronger together. As I typically sign off on my email, I truly hope that soon, I will see you at the races

This is not the morning we had planned. It’s been a difficult period for everyone at Somersault Events as we struggle to come to terms with the situation we find ourselves in. Today would have been the kick off to our season with one of our most popular events, the Early Bird Triathlon, Duathlon, Run. ... Instead there’s no start line, no finish line and no t-zone. There are no familiar faces. There are no new faces. We appreciate all the support we have received from the community and we want to say thank you to every single person in the past 20 years who has taken the start line at the Early Bird with us. And we hope to see many of you next year! Even though it’s a tough day for our crew and our participants and our community, we want to focus on the good. We want to keep moving forward. The start banner will be back! And there will be finish lines to cross! If you have memories of Early Bird’s past or are training for something in the future, tell us about it below! We’d love to see some smiles today! Stay safe! See you soon!
