Some interesting work on finding and breeding canker-resistant butternuts being done in eastern Ontario! Do you know of any butternuts that show canker resistance?

Many thanks to Win Laar for sharing these pics of a massive Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) from a recent excursion to Locust Grove in Queenston in the Niagara Pen...insula. This is thought by some to be the tallest forest-grown Black Walnut in Ontario and is simply huge in girth- quite impressive! See more

Quite interesting. The book 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus, the author describes how American societies before European contact often changed their environment in significant ways - notably the manufactured terra preta soils of the Amazon. There is evidence to suggest that some of the isolated shagbark and black walnut populations growing in Ontario are the result of humans moving seeds beyond their 'natural' range. Is this shellbark/groundnut 'garden' the creation of humans many years ago? https://www.facebook.com/heyzach/posts/10157740086742944

Just another invasive tree disease to worry about. Oaks in the red oak family are allegedly more susceptible than those in the white oak family, which can sometimes survive for years after infection.
