FOREIGN NATIONALS REUNITING WITH CANADIAN SPOUSES According to the Toronto Star, many Canadians are being reunited with their foreign spouses in Canada after being separated because of the #COVID19 pandemic. To speed up the process of spousal applications, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) increased staff responsible for spousal sponsorships by 66%.... As reported in the Toronto Star, between October and December 2020, a total of 15,999 files were finalized of which 14,816 applications were approved, 837 applications were refused and 346 applications were withdrawn. Two thirds of the completed applications were from individuals who were physically overseas while the rest were from inside Canada. Due to #COVID19, the processing time for spousal applications is currently 17 months for overseas applications and 15 months for in Canada applications. IRCC is working to speed up this process by implementing new technologies that will enable staff working from home to quickly process applications.
