Skiing friends on the West Coast please read: Our current snowpack is Dangerous. There is a layer of sugary facetted snow sitting on an ice crust down 3m in ...the snowpack. The 3m of snow above it is quite stable, but, sadly, that crust layer is not! If you think you are smarter than this layer, then it'll kill you. The avalanche will be bigger than you've ever experienced and it'll squish you like a bug. You wont live. Your family will be without you forever more. In most areas you wont be able to trigger it by skiing, as it's 3m down in the pack! But....when you ski near a shallow rocky area, or a wind scoured area, or beside a little tree poking out, you'll then be able to trigger this layer, and it'll propagate out into the deeper snow. (see cowboy ridge today). No this layer wont go away any time soon. Rain to the peak for 2 days may fix it. No it wont be active every day. It may sit dormant for a week or more. Ski in the wrong spot and you'll find it. If you think you're smarter than it, it will kill you. This is a layer to be respected, avoided, worked around and just plain left alone. Give it a WIDE margin, and live to ski another day. Please treat it with the respect it deserves, and we can all live to ski another day. How to avoid: Ski with a guide. Avoid the convex roll overs. Dont ski above cliffs Avoid the shallow rocky areas. Dont ski above creeks or terrain traps. Pick well supported terrain that is lower angle. Take more wine and cheese and less safety gear. You'll make better decisions and take less risk. This layer is all about risk management, and the risk is LARGE. Please share and keep your friends safe. The photo below is an avalanche that happened on Monday night in the middle of the storm. 3m crown. Sz 3 Avalanche. you would not survive. Please be smart this winter.

Riding was firm but fun today in the Pine Pass up Beaver Creek. Our tracks were only cutting about 5-10cm into the wind pressed snow and travelling was easy. Wi...nds were strong from the southwest but no longer moving much snow around. There was evidence of a widespread avalanche cycle in the area from last week that released large destructive avalanches. The fracture lines from these slides were almost completely blown in and reloaded with new snow in most cases. We saw no evidence of more recent slides. In our test pit we still had some sudden results on weak layers down 18 and 30cm's, but numerous sled test cuts on steep wind loaded slopes yielded no results. A new layer of feathery surface hoar has grown on the surface up to treeline elevations. It may be the new weak layer to watch after the next big storm rolls through and buries it! See more
