Welcome to our second Digital Community Art Wall, where we highlight local artists on a monthly basis and showcase their art pieces on our Facebook page! Please take some time to read through who our highlighted artist is and enjoy some of their pieces! This month, we are pleased to be showcasing Julienne Zhao, a 16 year old student from McMath Secondary School. Please see below a little blurb written by Julienne herself and her beautiful art pieces. "My name is Julienne Zha...o and I’m 16 years old. I’m currently a student at R. A. McMath Secondary. When it comes to art, I am completely self-taught. I had never taken a proper art class since I didn’t like the idea of having constraints and rules to follow. Thus, my journey in art is one that I have been fumbling through, but enjoying nonetheless. My inspiration for art has always been nature; I love depicting animals in scenery. I feel like we often forget or miss the beauty around us because we’re so occupied with what’s ahead. Events such as a simple sunrise or the frost on blades of grass in early morning brings me a feeling of serenity and peace that I attempt to share with others through art. Secret September, Tigress, and Depth are the paintings that follow this theme. Typically, I would describe my style as realistic but with a whimsical and painterly touch. I like the idea of portraying reality but at the same time, making it obvious that it is in fact, still a painting. That being said, I also love experimenting. I get bored with doing the same things so I turn to mediums that I’m not too familiar with. Both my artworks Violet Eyes and Golden were the result of said experimentations. I don’t typically draw people (especially faces) nor had I ever drawn digitally and Violet Eyes was my first attempt in doing so. I decided to include this piece in the line up because of what it represents: my exploration into something completely unfamiliar" Thank you Julienne for allowing us to showcase your pieces! Painting inspirations and reflections, Nikhat takes her creativity as a means to express her connection to a soulful world. A self-taught, award-winning visual Artist & Calligrapher, her passion for calligraphy is driven by the religious writings and poetic t...exts composed in an artistic way. As an explorer of Islamic Art, Nikhat studied the basics of the Nastaliq script of Calligraphy under the tutelage of a calligraphy master from Pakistan and Thuluth Script from the master calligrapher in Canada. With her contemporary approach, she enjoys combining traditional styles and techniques of writing scripts. She finds it as permission to explore the art of Calligraphy with the freedom to conceive an immaculate connection with The Truth (Divine). This sacred art of writing requires a lifetime to master however she likes sharing her knowledge at any stage of her learning. Her work has been part of exhibitions in the USA, Pakistan, and Canada. Nikhat served as the Program Director of Islamic Art Revival Series (2012-2014) in Dallas Texas, whose dual mission is to bring awareness and exposure to Islamic Art and to build cultural bridges between the Islamic world and North America. Since her move to Canada in 2016, she has worked with the National Art Gallery of Alberta, City of Surrey, City of Vancouver, and City of Richmond to host community events for people of all ages to experience the arts of the Islamic World first hand. Nikhat is the founder of the Islamic Art of British Columbia and often conducts the basics of Arabic calligraphy workshops for beginners.
