2016 Edamame Harvest

Southcoast IQF Inc 20.09.2020

The planting season is coming along great although we may run in some trouble with weather. We've had it quite dry lately only enough rain to wet the surface. When peas are planted in dry soil they do not germinate nor do they rot. The seed just sits there waiting for the next rain. Here is a picture of peas that are looking good, though they could use a drink :) Right next to the peas you can see the transplanter planting leeks.

So I went to visit a few fields today and thought I saw a big rock from a distance in the peas....when I got closer this is what was looking at me :)

Corn is planted and has been scuffled once already. This corn is expected to be mature for harvest by the 2nd week of August.

In the first picture you will notice grains in between the peas. That's rye. Rye acts as a nitrogen fixer planted in the fall. It overwinters and in the spring time is plowed down releasing all its nitrogen again for when the peas are planted. Sometimes some rye plants survive the tilling process and mature but these do not affect the final pea product.

Until about 2 weeks ago it has been very warm and very dry. But we also had 1 night of frost. "Peas are more tolerant of frost than either edible beans or soybeans. Pea crops are rarely lost from early spring frosts because they can have 2 nodes (growing points) on the plant stem between the seed and soil surface. If the growing point is killed, these nodes become active and each node will send a shoot to the soil surface. The pea plant would mature later than other pea plants that did not have their main shoot killed. Yield potential of the frosted pea plants would be determined by environmental conditions during flowering." We were lucky and didn't loose too much acreage to frost. The peas affected are coming up again.

I'm a little late with this update.... on Tuesday we had 10% bloom in the first pea field. This is a pretty good indicator that we will begin harvesting in about 16-18 days from today!!

So its been a while again since the last update. Our maintenance team is preparing the harvest fleet for another year and making improvements to the production lines for a more efficient production year. Thursday the last peas were planted and rolled. You can look forward to our product soon again :)

Monsanto and other biotech bullies have a steadily growing monopoly of the seed industry and have implemented a system where small farmers are losing the right ...to grow and save seeds that have been planted on this Earth for centuries.
