Beautiful Joe was easily one of the more unique bands to come out of Calgary in the mid-nineties. Three songwriters from very different styles and backgrounds, but still rootsy, paired with a top-notch rock and roll rhythm section. They were a short-lived supernova that recorded a live album with legendary producer Brian Ahern, and managed to blow-up the Toronto club scene in one explosive weekend, packing the Horseshoe and other clubs with record execs and happening pro...ducers, (like Colin Linden) lining up to see the band. They were one of the last groups to play the Rita McNeil show, before burning out in a blaze of glory with members moving on to other things. Jane Hawley had previously toured with Jr Gone wild and was a staple at the legendary Cameron House on Queen street. She is part Patsy Cline with the stage presence of Tina Turner. The spot light likes her. She writes personal songs that everyone can relate to that aren’t just songs about relationships but often set the scene of places she’s been. Steve Pineo is a prolific writer who majors in blues but can write songs that are wide ranging from R&B to Country and soul. Tim Leacock rounds out the threesome with songs that are definitely pop with some twang. His songs come in lean and fast like Nick Lowe or Graham Parker. Everyone chips in with amazing harmonies that sound like the Jayhawks or Big Star. Ross Watson and Danny Patton supply the horse-power to back up the front three. After crashing and burning the band all have kept in touch while doing all kinds of projects within and outside the music business. So it only seems natural to re-unite once in a while when the time is right. That said, actually seeing Beautiful Joe live is still a rare treat. They come around a little more often than Hailey’s comet but not by much... Don't miss this - https://southcountryfair.tickit.ca/
Husband and wife duo April Verch & Cody Walters is a true partnership of kindred musical spirits, each a world-class musician in their own right. Combining their unique backgrounds from Verch’s native Ottawa Valley and Walters’ heartland roots in Kansas, their music showcases endless creativity and versatilitytransitioning effortlessly from traditional Ottawa Valley step dancing and fiddle tunes, to old-time fiddle-banjo duets with tight-knit vocal harmonies, to innovative ...sandpaper foot percussion, all contrasted against Verch’s sweet soprano voice. The South Country Fair Association is sad to announce the postponement of the final weekend live streams of The Dog Star Sessions featuring Peter & The Wolves, Shaela Miller, John Wort Hannam, and Ryland Moranz. With the new Enhanced Public Health Measures finally announced we know that it is more important than ever to stay home and limit the potential for this virus to spread. Our SCF hearts are heavy knowing we will not bring the same joy to your living room this weekend..., but we must prioritize the health and safety of our artists and crew members above all else, and we promise these events will be rescheduled as soon as it is safe to do so. A heartfelt thanks goes out to the Empress Theatre Fort Macleod and Stronghold Brewing Co. for being such great partners through these difficult times. And remember, the beautiful thing about postponement is that we still have something to look forward to. Stay so safe out there. Look after one another. Be kind. Wear a mask in public spaces. Shop local. Hug your household, and make a phone call to a friend who might be feeling lonely during this period of isolation. In times of great struggle and hardship the greatest currency we have is kindness, so let’s make sure we keep those supply chains strong. #thedogstarsessions #staytuned #southcountryfair #postponedbutnotforgotten See more

The fair that would have been: Kitty & The Rooster is a rock n’ roll duo from Vancouver. They are known for their surf-tastic hooks, witty lyrics, clever theatrics, and ridiculously fun shows! Check them out here: http://ow.ly/6hty30r3UoX

This is how ya get down when angry skies try to dampen your party. -- What it’s all about, a moment of beauty in between sets back in 2016. -- #throwbackthursday ... -- ~ Doug Mitchell Art See more
The fair that would have been: Calgary’s own Copperhead immerses audiences in ambient, expansive soundscapes with texture and reverb, anchored by lead singer Liz Stevens’ goosebump-inducing smoky contralto and gorgeously dark and dreamlike lyrical narratives. Enjoy: http://ow.ly/M2Dq30qV8D2
Almost 3 years ago to the day we had a dirt devil from hell rip through our merch area right before the start of the Fair. It was an awful mess for a lot of people. -- Soon after, William Prince took the stage and made us feel like things were gonna be ok. His voice... his songwriting... that show was pure magic. -- #throwbackthursday #dirtdevil #albertaweather #pickupthepieces #community... -- ~@dougmitchellart See more
We can’t gather round the stage this year but we can gather round our radios. Grab a beverage, find a comfortable spot and tune in to CKUA Radio Network for the 2020 SCF inspired show at Noon today!
Normally right about now the fine musicians from our Kids Rock Camp would be kicking off the festivities. If you want to pretend you are at the fair this weekend, grab a beverage and tune in to the Dirty Windshield Radio Hour with @Leeroystagger on CKUA Saturday at noon for a SCF inspired set featuring this years artists. #thefairthatwouldhavebeen #albertafestivals #musicfestival

The Fair that would have been: Dripping with sensuality, fuzz covered grunge guitar and the infectious familiarity of 60’s rock-soul, The Torchettes combine their angelic and emphatic vocal tones to create a sound somehow ahead of and behind its time. Check them out: http://ow.ly/yACZ30qV8u3
These fine folks would normally be starting up our Kids Rock Camp today - participants have a week to form a band, choose a rockin band name, create a poster and perform an original composition on the main stage at the fair! It’s a lot but with the help of this team, THE KIDS ROCK! Look for Kids Rock Camp in 2021!
Always a ton of fun gettin’ the body moving when @quique_escamilla takes the stage Here’s a late night capture from 2013. -- ~ @dougmitchellart
It’s the time of year when we would normally be setting up tents, putting up signs and starting to gather. We miss everyone and hope you are staying safe and healthy.
