On September 23, the Federal Government will lay out its plan for the recovery through a Speech from the Throne. We need to ensure that new Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland hears from us on the crucial role that the sector can play in the recovery - if the Federal Government provides adequate support and works with us. Charities and nonprofits are essential to living with and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Take 60 seconds to ask Minister Freeland to include the sector in the recovery plan. The London Community Foundation recently released their Vital Signs Report for 2020 and this is what they’ve shared If the global COVID-19 pandemic illustrated one thing very clearly, it was that we can act together to change systems and practices even when confronted with significant fear and uncertainty.... But a community can only be as healthy as its most vulnerable member. The global crisis also brought London’s structural inequalities into sharp focus. Poverty affects our community in many ways and the pandemic exacerbated these issues, disproportionately impacting our most vulnerable. Those who didn't have a safe place to shelter or whose shelter was not safe continued to slip through the cracks, and too many in our community continued to have unequal access, or no access at all, to the essentials that many of us take for granted. In London, 18% of our population lives at or below the poverty line. The rate for our Indigenous and newcomer communities is even higher. In a city of over 400,000 people, approximately 72,000 Londoners are living in poverty. This truth has real human, economic and social costs. Too many Londoners are being left behind. Now is the time for change. Go to www.bethechangelondon.ca to learn more
