At this time of year, in particular, collisions can become even more common. Be sure to give yourself extra time when driving, stay focused on the road, and make sure your head restraint is positioned correctly.

COVID-19 UPDATE: DECEMBER 10, 202 By now you will have heard of the new restrictions implemented by the Alberta government in the latest effort to protect our healthcare system from becoming unable to look after not only those with COVID-19 but those with other health problems that require attention. Babies are still being born, people are still having heart attacks, accidents still happen, and people continue to get sick just like they always have, and it is very important t...hat we not lose sight of this in the face of COVID-19. These restrictions although more restrictive, are still not as sweeping as what we experienced in the spring where all services including physiotherapy were halted for five weeks. Since that time Physiotherapists in Alberta along with other regulated health professions have demonstrated an ability to continue to effectively provide care in a safe setting that does not endanger the health of the people, we serve nor contribute to the spread of COVID-19. As such, our Physiotherapists are unaffected by Tuesday’s announcement. Our Massage therapy services however will be temporarily discontinued as of December 13 as ordered in Tuesday’s announcement. We will be contacting those who have appointments upcoming in order to rebook in anticipation of being able to resume massage in January. Our commitment to providing a safe and comfortable facility for you remains unchanged, however, if you feel you would like a one-on-one virtual session to update exercises and discuss your condition, we are here for you virtually as well. HOLIDAY HOURS: We have decided that we will close the clinic from December 25 to January 3 in order to give our staff a much deserved break. We will reopen after the holidays on January 4, 2021. We hope everyone finds a way to make this Christmas special even though we cannot be with loved ones the way we would like. There are a lot of ways we can do this; it will take a little creativity and it won’t be what we are used to, but we will cherish next Christmas that much more! Take care and stay well!

Are you not comfortable with in-person treatment at this time? We are continuing to offer virtual sessions for anyone who should not or does not feel comfortable visiting the clinic right now. Using a program called Physitrack we can meet virtually, one-on-one and work together to address whatever problem you may be having. With this program, we can send you your exercise program and monitor it as you go. You will be able to message us and get feedback and ask questions of your physio at any time. "Along with recommendations to live an active lifestyle, the addition of strength training is something that research has shown to help prevent or decrease muscle weakness in older adults and should be added to our weekly exercise routines." However, reserarch shows that many older adults are not participating in muscle strengthening activities. Learn more

Most people only get to ski about 5-10 days per year. Because skiing tends not to offer the same opportunities for practice that other sports do, Dry Land Training for Skiing is something that should be part of your regular workout routine throughout the year. After this weekend's huge snowfall, we thought it was time to reshare some tips to help you stay safe when shovelling this winter: Warm-up! Just like you need to warm up before playing sports, you should do a quick warm-up before grabbing that shovel. Especially if the snow is heavy, you can be asking your body to do a lot of work be nice and let your body ease into it. Take your time! Don’t rush getting all the work done, especially if you’ve been doing a bit of hibe...rnating through this cold weather. Take breaks along the way to let your body catch up to the work. Watch your form! Avoid the bend and twist movement that can lead to an annoying back injury. Bend with your knees and not with your back. Use your legs to PUSH (not lift) the snow to the side. Stay safe out there! And if you do need to come see us, you can always give us a call at 780.438.0001.

Today marks the six-month anniversary of our reopening, and while a lot has changed, much has remained the same. We would like to thank you for being patient and helping us to improve our new routines along the way. We would also like to thank you for being responsible and staying home when you need to and asking us when you are not sure if you should. We continue to monitor Dr. Hinshaw’s updates and recommendations and adjust our practice according to what is the best curre...nt evidence in order to keep our patients and staff as safe as possible. What have we changed along the way? We required all persons entering the clinic to use a mask as of June 16, 2020 (six weeks before the city of Edmonton enacted their mask bylaw). We have been able to donate proceeds from selling masks during this time to the recovery of Teagan Marsden from his illness. Read Tagan's story. We implemented the ability for you to do Covid-19 pre-screening online prior to your appointment. What have we kept the same? We continue to screen our staff daily for signs/symptoms of COVID-19 and any potential contact that would put our patients or staff at risk for transmission as per Alberta Health Services guidelines. We continue our commitment to providing a clean facility with proper opportunity for appropriate physical distancing during your visit. We continue to modify our scheduling in order to minimize multiple patients arriving at the same time for their appointments. All staff continue to wear PPE and follow distancing recommendations for non-patient care. Moving our charting to electronic format allows for a minimal touch environment for your paperwork. We continue to offer virtual sessions where you meet with the therapist one on one over our online portal for those who should not go out or do not wish to have in-person treatment at this time.

Every three months South Edmonton Physical Therapy & Sport Rehab chooses a charity or organization for which we collect and contribute funds to. Through the support of the community, Edmonton's Food Bank provides food for over 20,000 people each month. The demand on the Food Bank will be higher this year and we want to do what we can to support this cause. South Edmonton Physical Therapy will match any donations made at the clinic so that we can help those in need have a Merry Christmas!

Using stretching and strengthening exercises, physical therapy can help restore your mobility and allow you to get back to moving pain-free. If assistive devices such as canes, braces, or orthotics are necessary, we are also able to provide an assessment and fit individuals as needed.

Have you been outside doing more yard work lately? A common issue that comes with doing yard work is back pain; this is not unexpected when you consider that many tasks outside require sustained bending, lifting, and awkward positions. When working outside, make sure you are using proper technique for any lifting and taking frequent breaks. Consider alternating gardening tasks to minimize time spent in one position and to help avoid muscle fatigue.
