We hosted our annual subsurface drip irrigation field day last Wednesday! We took some interested growers on a tour of our current SDI project at Valk Land and Cattle Ltd. and listened to the owner, Lawrence Vandervalk, speak to why he switched to SDI. We also toured a previous SDI project at First Fruit Farms and heard an update from the owner, Matthew Wiens, as well as a research update from a representative at Lethbridge College.... Planting Life Haiti has a special place in our hearts at Southern Irrigation. The charity was first created by Bert Oostenbrink, the founder of Southern Irrigation, with the goal to help farmers and their families escape living in poverty. One of the ways PLH does this is by introducing drip irrigation systems on farms in Haiti. These systems use much less water than traditional flood irrigation which is especially important in the dry season when farmers have a difficult ti...me watering their fields. By working with farmers to use drip irrigation systems, farmers can use less water and labour, and enjoy better crops year round. This will give them an increased livelihood, which will help them to live out of poverty. Southern Irrigation has organized many internal trips, sending employees to Haiti to teach the local farmers and install drip systems. This charity also includes programs such as the Agriculture Bursary program, which helps youths in need finish highschool. Schools are starting again in August in Haiti, and our Agriculture Bursary Program will complete its 2019-2020 year. Loudine (picture in the comments) is one of our brightest young women in the program, and we are blessed to support her academic journey. Though these are not normal times (there being a global pandemic, wild fires, plane crashes, murder bees, and Tiger King), we need to remind ourselves that our country has still been blessed with so much. Let us continue to remember and support charities, like Planting Life Haiti, who continue life-giving work to those who have a lot less.
