Bid on Sidney Kelsie’s Untitled at Art Frenzy. The auction that supports art is now virtual and open for nationwide bidding. We go live tonight for the final hour of bidding at the virtual Art Frenzy gala. Bid. Bid often. A Black man of Caribbean heritage, Sidney Kelsie was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1928. He joined the Canadian Navy at the age of sixteen, before going to work at logging camps. After suffering serious injury to his legs in a logging accident, he went to ...work as a house painter. He had to give that up in 1979 due to his old injuries and at the age of fifty-three and retired he started fashioning cut-out wood shapes which he painted in colourful hues and hung in the yard of his Edmonton home. Passersby began taking an interest in those odd-looking hanging artworks and would occasionally ask to buy individual pieces. Kelsie would often comply and in this way could supplement the meagre income that he shared with his wife Louise. I was born in Edmonton, Alberta, where I grew up running wild in the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Since 1989, I have lived and worked in Lethbridge enjoying my daily walks in and around the Oldman River Valley. Sculptor, John Geer in his catalogue essay for Riding a Dark Horse, 1988, references both the dynamic edge between art and craft, and the ...necessity to maintain trust in one’s self as we embrace the unknown in our engagement with a studio practice. His observations remain true today as I continue in my artistic development. There is rarely a project I pursue that is not propelled by trust and driven by the pleasure that comes from making work and working. Joy and excitement drive my practice as I explore the materials, ideas, processes and techniques of art and art making. Mary-Anne McTrowe was born and raised in southern Alberta. She earned her B.F.A. at the University of Lethbridge in 1998 and went on to pursue graduate studies at Concordia University in Montreal, receiving her M.F.A. in studio art in 2001. Her work has spanned a number of different media, and her practice i...s focuses on the question of how things that are familiar to us can be made unfamiliar; how a change in context can render something temporarily strange and perhaps even unrecognizable. Recent bodies of work include using crochet and weaving as carriers of information, the crocheting of cozies for everyday objects, and performance and static work about the sasquatch. McTrowe was a member of the now retired art-ernative band The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA Les Phonoréalistes with Daniel Wong, and currently works as a technician in the art department at the University of Lethbridge.
