Question about your Smoke Alarm- When did you check your smoke alarm last? Your smoke alarms should be tested regularly by pressing the test button ... How often should you check? It is recommended at least once a month to check the alarm, and that there is no dust or dirt on the alarm. When do you replace the batteries? - At a minimum, install a new battery in each alarm at least once a year. or - All battery-operated smoke alarms are required to emit a warning sound, usually an intermittent chirp when the battery power is low. When warning chirp sounds, replace your battery immediately. Never wait. or - Change your batteries when you change your clocks in the spring and fall. How long do alarms last? Smoke alarms do wear out, so if you think your alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them with new ones. What do you do if you hear a smoke alarm? - Get out and stay out - Call 911 from a neighbours or cell phone - Meet at your designated meeting place Choose the right smoke alarms. There are many types of smoke alarms available with different power sources, technologies and features. Before purchasing smoke alarms, visit ontario.ca/firemarshal for information, or contact the fire department Install in the proper locations. Ontario law requires that working smoke alarms be located on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. Avoid installing smoke alarms in or adjacent to kitchens and bathrooms, or near air vents, windows and ceiling fans..

Water and grease don’t mix. If you have a small grease fire on the stove, slide a lid over the pot and turn off the stove.

Fire Prevention Week 2020: October 4-10 The South Glengarry Fire Services is urging everyone in South Glengarry to take some simple steps to prevent kitchen fires in their home. This year’s theme of Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 4-10, is Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen! The theme is very timely as cooking fires continue to be the leading cause of home fires in Ontario. It focuses on the prevention of cooking fires and staying fire safe in the kitchen.... Simple steps to serve up fire safety in the kitchen include: - Always stay in the kitchen when cooking and turn off the stove if you must leave the kitchen. - Keep a proper fitting lid near the stove. If a pot of oil catches fire, slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove. Do not move the pot. Never throw water on a burning pot. - Keep anything that burns - plastic utensils, dishcloths, paper towels - a safe distance from the stove. - Cook responsibly. To prevent cooking fires, you must be alert. You will not be alert if you have consumed alcohol or drugs. - Wear tight-fitting or rolled up sleeves when using the stove. Loose, dangling clothing can easily catch fire. - Keep young kids one meter away from the stove. Turn pot handles away from the stove’s edge so they can’t be easily knocked off. - If you burn yourself while cooking, run cool water over the wound for three to five minutes. If the burn is severe, seek medical attention.
