The Jack Riddell Scholarship Fund was established by the Riddell family together with friends and colleagues to honor the many contributions of Jack Riddell, fo...rmer Ontario Minister of Agriculture. The first scholarship was presented recently to Matthew Whittemore, a graduate of Stratford Northwestern who is now studying at the University of Guelph. "It is truly an honor to receive the Jack Riddell Scholarship in Agriculture," says Matthew. "Getting recognized for the hard work I put in throughout my high school education feels amazing. Additionally, the award offers a very nice financial relief. All combined, it allows me to focus harder on my journey into the future." Congratulations, Matthew! See more

South Huron Community Fund announces 2020 recipient of Lavender Family Scholarship In loving memory of her late husband Jack, Joyce Lavender established a scholarship in 2017 to benefit students living in the greater Hensall area who wish to pursue a career in the trades. The South Huron Community Fund is proud to announce that the 2020 recipient is Alexis (Lexi) McLeod.... Lexi is passionate about automotive mechanics. She has received excellent marks in her automotive courses every year and successfully completed a co-op placement at an automotive dealership. Upon graduation she will also earn a Specialist High Skills Major in Transportation (Automotive) and get her "red seal" diploma. Annually, the Lavender Fund awards a student graduating from South Huron District High School with the highest mark in automotive or mechanical technology and who lives in the greater Hensall area. Jack Lavender operated Jack’s Small Engine Repair in Hensall and, before passing away in 2010, wanted to leave a legacy for students in the area who are interested in this field. Establishing a family legacy with our organization is easy and can be set up to benefit a specific charitable cause or a general fund supporting priorities in our community, said Tom Prout, Chair of the South Huron Community Fund. Our organization is proud to work with the Lavender Family to create this wonderful legacy. Whether the priorities relate to the arts, recreation, health and wellness or the environment, the South Huron Community Fund is dedicated to supporting the long-term needs of our region. Funds donated create a permanent endowment that generates annual grants for local charitable organizations. Grant applications are available on the Grand Bend Community Foundation website at grandbendcommunityfoundation.ca. South Huron District High School

#OnThisDay - September 1, 1980 - near Thunder Bay, ON As he neared the 18 mile mark, Terry could see miles of supporters along the highway, cheering him on, say...ing, Keep going, you can do it, we’re all behind you. Terry felt like he was having a heart attack, the pain was so intense. He took a break and crawled into his sleeping bag, hoping the pain might subside. It didn’t. Terry got back up, ran another mile until he could see no more people along the road. It was then he said to himself, This may be my last mile. He got in the van and asked his best friend Doug to take him to a hospital. Later that day, Terry called his parents in Port Coquitlam and told them the cancer had returned. He had run his last mile of the Marathon of Hope. In his last journal entry, all Terry wrote was: "21 miles. 3,339 miles total." Honour Terry's Try. Donate today. https://bit.ly/3lHgE6v

South Huron Vitality Fund makes first donations to local charities In July, the South Huron Vitality Fund made its first grants to three local organizations: the Huron Waves Music Festival, Big Brothers Big Sisters South Huron, and South Huron Winterfest. It was exciting to be part of the process of making the first grants from the Vitality Fund, said Tom Prout, Chair of the South Huron Community Foundation. We had excellent applications, and I know the grants will make ...a real difference in our community. Established in 2019, the South Huron Vitality Fund is an agreement between the Municipality of South Huron and the Grand Bend Community Foundation to support charities that provide direct programs, services, or activities to enhance the quality of life for South Huron residents. This fund will continue to grow and produce an income every year for many years to come. In addition, the Municipality provided $10,000 in flow-through funding to ensure that local needs could be met this year. Municipality of South Huron Grand Bend Community Foundation
