Don't miss today's special two-piano Latin jazz concert featuring Cuban father and son duo Miguel de Armas and Miguel Angel de Armas, taking us on a unique excu...rsion through classic and original tunes by Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Brazilian composers. Miguel and Miguel have been developing their two-piano collaboration over the past several years while visiting one another in Cuba and Canada. If Miguel senior carries the balance of experience that can only come with decades on the world stage, Miguel junior brings fresh performing perspectives - often inspired by technology and production techniques - that are most naturally felt and conveyed by the younger generation. Thus their musical exchange is at once a musical dialogue defined by firecracker playing technique, and an intergenerational conversation in which father and son learn equally from one another. This, a powerful reminder that while we are never too old to learn, equally we're never too young to teach! The concert starts in 45 minutes on the music at Southminster page: https://www.facebook.com/MusicatSouthminster/live_videos/ DOMS January 27: "The Cuban Pianos" Miguel de Armas piano Miguel Angel de Armas pianos 'La Comparsa' - Ernesto Lecuona 'Los Ojos de Pepa' - Manuel Saumell 'Tres Lindas Cubanas' - Guillermo Castillo 'Cachita' - Rafael Hernández Marin 'Illusion' - Miguel de Armas 'Almendra' - Abelardo Valdés 'El Manisero' - Moisés Simon 'Tres Palabras' - Osvaldo Farrés 'Black Orpheus' - Antonio Carlos Jobim 'Mambo Influenciado' - Chucho Valdés Renowned Cuban pianist Miguel de Armas moved to Canada in 2011, bringing with him a rich and sophisticated musical heritage. Prior to emigrating to Canada, as co-founder of N.G. La Banda, one of Cuba’s most legendary Timba bands, de Armas packed concert halls wherever he went, performing at prestigious Jazz festivals and venues across the globe. He has recorded over 60 albums and collaborated with a who’s-who of celebrated Cuban and international artists. Sine bringing his musical talents to Ottawa, Miguel has worked tirelessly to introduce audiences to the music of his homeland. Developing a unique, high-energy fusion of Jazz and Afro Cuban music, he founded the Miguel de Armas Quartet in 2012, which now in its tenth year, has contributed richly to the Canadian musical scene, enhancing appreciation for Cuban music and carrying on the rich tradition of Cuban-Canadian musical collaboration. Miguel Angel de Armas, born in Cuba in 1993, is an emerging pianist, composer and producer. He holds a degree in composition from the High Institute of Arts in Havana, and has collaborated with renowned Cuban artists including Yassek Manzano, Cesar Lopez, Ernan Lopez-Nussa, Leo Brower and many others, performing in festivals and concerts in Havana, South Africa, and across North and South America and Europe. Miguel Angel has taken top prizes at the JOJAZZ International Jazz Festival and Amadeo Roldán Piano Competition in Havana, and has appeared in concert at the National Arts Centre of Ottawa. Currently based in Ottawa, he continues to produce music that explores the intersection of electronic, pop, jazz and world music. Support the series via: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/47147

Don't miss today's concert dedicated to the memory of the greatly revered violinist and teacher, Yehonatan Berick. The concert will feature music by J.S. Bach, Vivaldi and Beethoven and performed by Anna Baksheeva (violinist and one of Mr. Berick's students) and Frédérick Lacroix (piano). The concert starts today (Wednesday Dec 9) at 12 PM on the "Music at Southminster" page: https://www.facebook.com/MusicatSouthminster/live_videos/ YEHONATAN BERICK August 30, 1968 - October ...31, 2020 On October 31, 2020, the music world lost a truly gifted violinist and beloved pedagogue. Born in Israel on August 30, 1968, the young Yehonatan was noticed by Isaac Stern and studied with Ilona Feher, later working with Henry Meyer, Kurt Sassmanshauss, and Dorothy DeLay. Prizewinner at the 1993 Naumburg competition and the 1996-1997 Prix Opus, he established himself as a teacher, soloist, and chamber musician of distinction, performing in concert series throughout North America, Europe and Israel. Yehonatan completed his studies in Tel Aviv and Cincinnati before moving to Canada in the mid-1990s. Before coming to Ottawa, he taught at the University of Michigan, McGill University, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Toronto. Affectionately known to many as 'Big Y', he was adored for his brilliant mind, sense of humour, generous spirit, and passion for music. Being in his presence ensured laughter, sweet treats, hugs, insight, candor, and kindness. And, if you were lucky enough to find him with a fiddle in his large, yet extraordinarily agile hands, there would be music and magic. (Excerpted from The Globe and Mail) May he rest in peace and may his legacy live on.
