We want folks to know that we are completely in support of and in solidarity with everyone who has taken to the streets to express themselves, defend their communities, and risk their lives to make the world a better place for everyone who suffers at the hands of the cops, and in particular black folks who have been systemically subjugated by the police, the colonial state, and the white supremacist system for centuries. We especially feel the need to express our support ...for those who are choosing to riot, loot stores, and burn down police stations, because these are the types of actions that many people unfortunately still condemn, and because property destruction is nothing compared to the murder of BIPOC folks, and because these actions are what needs to happen for real change to be made. That being said, we recognize that for countless reasons, many people cannot -- or choose not to -- take to the streets, and we recognize that they are nonetheless contributing in important ways: like donating or raising funds, engaging in online activism, starting difficult conversations, and doing some hard self-reflection. Here in Kingston / Katarokwi, we are extremely appreciative of the Black Luck Collective for organizing a vigil this week, as well as anyone else who will be organizing other events and initiatives in the coming days. The amount of people turning out for this cause greatly surpasses the turnout we've ever seen for other events in town. We know that the question of whether or not to attend a gathering is a difficult one given how many times we've been encouraged to socially distance over the past few months, but people are recognizing that racism is an even greater threat to public health than COVID-19, and this is amazing to see. We hope y'all stay strong and stay safe. We look forward to seeing everyone on the streets and on the dance floor. Abolish the police. Rest in power, George Floyd.
