From Nature Conservancy of Canada / Conservation de la nature Canada: The Nature Conservancy of Canada and Couchiching Conservancy are working together to protect the 1,362-acre Cedarhurst Alvar property at the heart of Carden Alvar! This property was proposed to be developed as a shooting range, but if we can raise the required funds by spring 2021, it has the chance to be protected in perpetuity. Located northeast of Lake Simcoe, the Carden Alvar supports some of the highes...t quality and most extensive alvar habitat on the planet and is designated as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest and contains globally rare alvar habitat and species. This area is recognized worldwide as a destination for birdwatching due to the large number and diversity of grassland birds, including grasshopper sparrow, bobolink, upland sandpiper, field sparrow, eastern meadowlark and loggerhead shrike! NCC would love to invite you to join them for an evening on the alvar virtually! On Monday, November 16th at 7:00pm, NCC and CC are teaming up to host a virtual tour of the Cedarhurst Alvar property. To save your spot, RSVP to Laura Vaughan at [email protected] or Tanya Clark at tanya@couchconservancy

For #TreatiesRecognitionWeek, here's a quick look at how treaties shaped the area that now contains Riverwood. Signed on February 28, 1820, Land Surrender 22 wa...s an agreement that covers the tracts of land on either side of the Credit River in what is now Mississauga, and also Sixteen Mile Creek and Twelve Mile Creek (Bronte Creek) in what is now Oakville. The land on either side of these waterways were transferred from the Mississaugas to the British Crown "to have and to hold" in exchange for the sum of twenty shillings. The land we now call Riverwood is part of tract F on the map. To learn more about treaty rights and relationships in Ontario, head over to ontario.ca/treaties. #TreatyON
