With the holidays approaching, we wanted to remind clients we will be closed Dec 25 through 27 and January 1 through 3. If you need food or medication refills to tide you over this period, please order these as soon as possible. It will often take 3 business days for us to get most foods or medication and special order items are taking longer than usual often greater than a week. This is due to delays in production and transport. We wish you all a healthy and happy holiday season!

SOUTH SIDE CHRISTMAS GIVING CHALLENGE 2020!! We all know this has been a tough year for many people and the rescue groups and low income pets are no exception. We will be raising funds and supplies for our partner rescues until the end of December. In the spirit of giving, all individuals donating money or supplies of at least $10 in value or purchasing a sign will have their name entered to win a $50 South Side Gift Certificate! You will get one entry for each $10 you do...nate and increase your chances of winning! The draw will be made on January 1, 2021. HOW CAN I HELP?? 1. Drop off supplies at our hospital for Berkeley’s Place! Berkeley’s Place is a non-profit foundation that acts as an animal support network for pet rescues. They help to ease the burden on local rescue groups by sharing resources such as food, supplies, and money between all groups. Berkeley’s Place is most in need of kitten food, cat food, puppy toys, strong dog sized leashes and cat litter. 2. Purchase a wooden sign for $20 or donate money. All proceeds raised from this will be divided between our three rescue partners ARTS Senior Rescue, FARRM Rescue, and Precious Rabbits Rescue. 3. Bring your pet in for a nail trim! All funds raised from nail trims until the end of December will be donated directly to Tails of Help. Tails of Help provides funding for medical care for low income Albertans and is being used more than ever before!

We would like to next highlight our amazing Registered Veterinary Technologist Rhonda! Rhonda has always had a deep love for animals and graduated from the Animal Health Technology program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1992. Since this time she gained valuable experience working in small animal and emergency medicine in multiple clinics prior to joining our team at South Side Animal Hospital in 2007. Rhonda is a very experienced and knowledgeable person... and loves working with families to help teach them how to care for their pets. The favorite part of her job is helping our senior patients, trying to keep them healthy and comfortable as long as possible. She divides her work time working between the back of the clinic as an appointment and surgery technologist and as the friendly voice you hear on reception! Rhonda is a busy mother of 2 and spends most of her time supporting her children in their activities. She also shares her home with a sweet little cat named Lexi. We love having Rhonda on our team and her kindness and compassion combined with many years of experience and skill make her a top-notch tech!

NOVEMBER IS CELEBRATING SENIORS MONTH Did you know that: Pets are good at hiding pain and illness?... Pets age much quicker than we do and can be considered seniors by as early as: 3 years of age for a guinea pig 4-5 years of age for a rabbit 6 years old for a larger breed dog and 9-10 years old for a small dog or cat? The majority of our senior pets will have some form of illness that is undetectable at home and can only be found through a physical examination and blood work? To promote senior health and celebrate our sweet senior friends, we are running a senior pet promotion when a senior blood screen is recommended by one of our veterinarians during a senior health exam. Book your pet in today to see one of our veterinarians for a full check-up and we will let you know which tests are best suited to your pet!

The next registered veterinary technologist we would like to highlight is Danielle! Danielle started as a volunteer at South Side Animal Hospital in 2007. After spending time at our clinic, she applied to NAIT graduating in 2010. During school Danielle continued to work at our hospital part-time, moving to a full time position as a Registered Veterinary Technologist. Animals have always been a huge part of Danielle’s life and her very first pet, a newt named Smokie, is now... well over 30 years old and still going strong. Danielle had actually wanted a pet dinosaur and her parents felt this was a fair compromise. Her furmily has since expanded to include cats, a dog, a rabbit, a snake, and a horse. Danielle always wanted to provide the best healthcare she could for her "furmily" and becoming a Veterinary Technologist has allowed her to do this. The difference we can make in the quality of life for sick pets makes her job very fulfilling. Danielle has spent a great deal of time taking extra courses in exotic pet medicine and has become extremely proficient with rabbits and rodents, which is no small feat! Over time Danielle has also taken on some management tasks and helps keeping our team running smoothly. We are so grateful to have Danielle on our team and want to take this opportunity to highlight the amazing skills, passion for animals, and work ethic she brings to South Side!
