Luxating Patella or floating knee cap is a common problem in toy and small dog breeds. It occurs when the dog's kneecap (patella) is dislocated from its normal anatomic position in the groove of the thigh bone (femur). The initial symptoms include occasional limping, an intermittent skip in the gait, sudden loss of support on the limb, abnormal sitting posture with the knee placed outward; all of which are usually intermittent. It can be very painful and limit your dogs mob...ility. Taking a proactive approach to treating the condition -- no matter how mild, and especially in a young dog -- can often prevent future surgery, joint degeneration, and diminished quality of life. The first thing you should do for a dog diagnosed with a floating kneecap is help him achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. It's just common sense that the heavier the dog, the more burden there will be on his knees. Number two, it's very important to keep your pet moving. Maintaining excellent muscle tone will help your dog's body form a kind of cage around the knee which will keep the patella in place. Dogs with this condition can benefit greatly from chiropractic adjustments to keep the hips and knees in alignment and to help prevent the condition from progressing. HIP DYSPLASIA - once a rarity among dogs is now a common diagnosis. Breeds most affected include: German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Newfoundlands, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers. Dogs that are overweight may also have a higher chance of showing signs of hip dysplasia. Regular chiropractic adjustments help maintain proper structure in the joints surrounding the hip, while also minimizing the impact the hip itself is experiencing. Keeping these joints within normal ...will stabilize them and keep degeneration at a minimum. For those dogs afflicted with hip dysplasia and experiencing symptoms, it can also do wonders as far as palliative care. Restoring a joint to normalcy provides relief to the body and will decrease inflammation in the joint.
