Sparwood Trails Alliance

Dedicated to developing and maintaining a first class, sustainable trail system in and around Sparwood. The above summarizes the core values of the Sparwood Trails Alliance. We would like to inform the public that the trails that we build and maintain, as well as those that we assist with within the town limits of the District of Sparwood, are multi-user trails for ALL forms of non-motorized recreation. You heard us right - walk, run, bike, hike, snowshoe, cross country ski, ...etc. We also welcome your four-legged furry friends - please remember to pick up after them. We are supportive of other outdoor recreation activity pages on social media, but it is important to remember that we are not affiliated with them. We do not control the content that is posted on other sites and the opinions represented by outside groups are not within our control. Please note that any trail closure of a STA trail will be posted on the STA Trail Conditions page. The District of Sparwood also communicates trail closures within town limits, which we will subsequently share on our page also. Trails are only closed if there is a safety issue that must be addressed or if the landowner requires a trail closure. You can also find the most up-to-date grooming report on the STA Trail Conditions page. Did you know the STA is responsible for the maintenance and grooming of 27.5 km of winter trail? The District of Sparwood has engaged the STA in a contract to maintain the 12.5 km of groomed trails within town limits. This includes trails such as Elk River Loop, Mountain Shadows, Cherrywood and Disc Golf. Additionally, the STA grooms Lunch Loop, Meander, By Pass and the Great Trail to the Lookout. All of the grooming is done by our volunteers. In addition to winter maintenan...ce, in the spring our volunteer trail fairies are busy ensure that any remnants or safety hazards that Mother Nature left over the winter are removed from the trails. How does your membership fee tie into trail maintenance? Well, simply put, trail maintenance costs money! Our community did an excellent job of fundraising in years past to purchase the snow dogs for winter grooming. However, in order to run them we need to purchase fuel. Other tooling from chainsaws to weed eaters to hand rakes are all purchased in order to maintain the trails. Portions of your membership goes to ensuring that we are able to run these tools as well as to replace them as they age. As a New Year is upon us, there are new funding possibilities! Did you know that purchasing your yearly membership aids the STA in grant writing? Simply put, high membership numbers give the STA more opportunities to apply for grant funding. Organizations are more inclined to provide grant funding (or donations!) if they know their money will benefit a large community. As mentioned previously, when applying for grants the STA must already have land use agreements in place an...d approval from the landowner to build the trails. This means we are always working a few steps ahead with our planning to ensure we have approved trails ready when grant opportunities arise.
