Please consider helping if you are able. Here at the SPCA St. John’s we continue to follow the protocol, advice and recommendations from Government and our public health agency. We have put strict measures in place to protect our staff, as we continue to come to work to provide care to the animals currently at our shelter. Our shelter remains closed to the public; however, we continue to accept animals into our care and to offer contactless adoptions. With the new restriction...s put in place by our Chief Medical Officer earlier this week, we have had to close both our thrift stores. This is devastating to our organization, as they are our main source of income. While our employees are working on options for online shopping and curbside pick up, the closure of the stores combined with the halt to our in person fundraising events will have drastic effects on our organization. Even in the short term. On top of this, we have recently committed to assisting North Atlantic Remote Vet Services by taking in 20 or more stray dogs that have been rescued from Natuashish. We are anticipating these dogs will be in our care in the coming days. This means we will have extra mouths to feed and an increase in our veterinary expenses. With the majority of our activities at a standstill for the second time in less than 12 months, and as an organization that depends on your generosity to feed and care for so many, we’re deeply worried about how this will affect the animals who depend on us. That is why we would like to ask you to consider helping us through these uncertain times with a donation. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. IF YOU CAN, PLEASE SEND A GIFT TODAY The wonderful thing about animals is their ability to provide us with joy and unconditional love something that becomes even more valuable in times like these. If you are fortunate enough to have a pet with you at home, please give them an extra cuddle on behalf of all of us at the SPCA St. John’s. And if you can, it would be wonderful if you are able to help us so we can be there for the animals that so desperately need our love and care. With our thanks and best wishes for the health of you and your loved ones. You can give now by clicking the link below. https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/59411

Huge thanks to these amazing donors who dropped off tons of supplies for our shelter this holiday season! They decided instead of gifts this year they would donate to the animals in our care! All the staff and animals greatly appreciate your generosity!

Did you know that our Thrift Stores are our largest fundraiser? We are currently seeking volunteers for both of our Thrift Store locations for the New Year! Both of our Thrift Store locations help fundraise much needed funds to help animals in need and it takes a lot of great volunteers to keep them running.... We are looking for volunteers who have a positive attitude, are willing to use a simple cash register, keep the store neat and tidy, price, sort & organize donations, and work as a team under minimal supervision. We are taking all precautions to help the spread of COVID-19. All volunteers & members of the public are required to wear a mask while in the store, we have limited the number of volunteers & public in the store at all times to adhere to social distancing protocols advised by Public Health. If you are interested in volunteering at either of our thrift store locations please visit our website at www.spcastjohns.org/volunteer . If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected]

Are you ready for this adoption update! Meet Casey & Weasley! Here is what their adoptive mom had to say about them: Meet Casey (dog, 17 yrs) and Weasley (cat, 2 yrs). Casey was 10 yrs old when we first met him. Despite being hoarse from barking, having horrible teeth and challenges with walking we took him home. That was seven years ago! During these seven years many of Casey's teeth were removed, his legs got stronger and he was always excited to chase his rubber chick...en (despite his frequent stumbles). For a number of years he was even able to accompany his furry siblings on walks. As Casey got older his stumbling grew more frequent and a couple of years ago he lost the ability to walk. Around the same time, Weasley was adopted into the family. With three dogs and two other cats in the house, Weasley (cat) immediately gravitated towards Casey (dog). At first Casey was a little uncertain about this tiny kitten that would frequently try to suckle him but soon the two settled in. As you can see from the pictures, these two have a special bond. Weasely's favourite place is on top of, or cuddled into Casey. Weasley cleans Casey, attempts to eat with him and generally just loves his senior brother. Casey in turn sometimes get grumbly until Weasley comes to snuggle in. Thank you to the SPCA for facilitating this friendship. For anyone thinking about adopting, don't rule out adopting a senior pet. The moments, and memories are worth it! Isn’t this update amazing! We love to see how our animals are doing in their furever homes!

***MAXED OUT ON APPLICATIONS*** Meet Hunter! Hunter is a husky/sheppard mix who is approximately a year and a half old and came to us through no fault of his own. Hunter is a little timid at first and will need some time to warm up, but once he does watch out! He is a friendly, super active boy who enjoys long walks. Hunter is a very good listener he will sit, lie down, shake hands and stay. He takes treats very gently and loves his belly when it comes to food time. ... Hunter can go to a home with children aged 12 and up. He requires a cat free home, but can live with other dogs, pending a dog meet. Hunter is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines & flea/worm treatment, and vet checked. If you are interested in adopting Hunter please email us at [email protected], we will be accepting the first approved applicant and that approved applicant will be contacted via email. Further paperwork is to be completed online once we receive the application. Please note that we do not accept adoption requests via messenger or telephone. Payment must be via e-transfer or credit card/debit visa over the phone. Due to Covid-19 we are not allowed to have public members in the building, so this will be a 'contactless' adoption, unfortunately we cannot do meet and greets at this time. The only exception to this will be a dog meet, if necessary.

Check out some of our stats for 2020! Though this past year has certainly been different we are happy to say that even with our shelter being closed to the public since March we have still been able to adhere to our same standard of care for the animals. We are happy to announce that we were able to help 1068 animals find their furever homes through our contactless adoption process. ... Thanks to all of our supporters and adopters for making 2020 a successful year!

***MAXED OUT ON APPLICATIONS*** This handsome boy is Skoll. Skoll is a 2.5 year old Labrador Husky who is now available for adoption and all he wants is to find his furever home before the howlidays! He is a very energetic boy who loves nothing more than going for walks, runs and playing with his toys. We do believe that Skoll will do fine with other dogs in the future but for right now he would do better in a home as the only pet, where he can get all of the attention he d...eserves. Skoll is not the biggest fan of cats so a cat-free home is a must. Due to Skoll’s high energy we are recommending him go to a home with children over the age of 6. Skoll has been neutered, vet checked, microchipped, vaccinated, and treated for fleas/worms. Please remember that a pet is a lifelong commitment and we would like serious inquiries only, so that we can find the best suitable home for this high energy boy. We want to make sure he can get the attention and exercise he needs and deserves with his new home and for the new adopters to understand his high energy and playfulness If you are interested in adopting Skoll please email us at [email protected] to request an application. We will be scheduling meets with Skoll for those who meet the adoption criteria.

Meet Olivia! Olivia has been with us a while as we have been trying to socialize her as much as possible to find her forever home! She sometimes will hiss at you when you enter the room, or maybe even a quick swipe with her paw, but she certainly doesn't mean to cause any harm as she's still trying to figure everything out! She is only 4.5 months old and came to us originally as a stray from a barn environment, where she was living outside. She enjoys snuggling up on her bed... and is good with other cats (with proper introduction), we are unsure how she would be with dogs or smaller children but hope with proper introductions and time she would certainly come around If you are interested in adopting Olivia please email us at [email protected], we will be accepting the first approved applicant and that approved applicant will be contacted via email. Further paperwork is to be completed online once we receive the application. Please note that we do not accept adoption requests via messenger telephone or email only Payment must be via e-transfer or credit card/debit visa over the phone Due to Covid-19 we are not allowed to have public members in the building, so this will be a 'contactless' adoption, unfortunately we cannot do meet and greets at this time.
