SPECTRUM Home Inspection 25.11.2020

Every Homeowner Should Know! Hi folks, The warm weather is just around the corner! Are you ready for the leaking roof? Probably not, right! ... This winter surprised all of us with incredible amount of snow. Storm after storm. Some houses got hit so hard that some lower roofs which are just below the windows, are packed with the snow so people can’t even see the sunlight anymore. Hundreds of square feet in the valleys on the roofs are still covered with a lot of snow. All these conditions are recipes for the problem that called ICE DAMMING. (A lot of snow on roofs is one of the reasons for Ise Damming when Thaw / Freeze conditions occur). To reduce or illuminate potential leak and water damage to the structure and interior finishes is to clean the roof as soon as possible. It is a dangerous activity which is not for everyone. We have to remember that the asphalt shingles can be easily damaged in cold weather. That’s why we need a special tools to remove the snow from the roof. Shop around and make sure you’ve got the right tool for yourself if you decided to clean the roof anyway. Please remember about use of ladders! This can potentially lead to the physical injury of you decide to climb the ladder which placed on the icy driveway! If you feel you don’t know how properly use your ladder, just don’t use it !!! Please refer to the special training by specialists that can train you on how safely to use ladders. There are many providers of the FALL PROTECTION COURSE in Ottawa that you may want to go through and study how to use ladders. If you don’t know what is the condition on your roof, then this is the time to put on your snow boots and run outside to take a look. Your roof may be the one of these that needs immediate attention or may be your roof is steep enough and there is no snow at all ! One more thing to mention, home inspectors DO NOT CLEAN ROOFS , but we do inspect them when possible! SPECTRUM Home Inspection wishes to all of you a HAPPY SPRING and no leaking roofs ! Warm Regards, Arseny Reider

Windows And The Cold Weather! Hi Folks! In the past a little while, I constantly hear the rumors (some of them true though) about the windows in the houses and the associated issues like sweating windows from the inside or even in between the glass pans, formation of the mildew/black deposits on the windows and the frames (in the lower corners usually) and other not pleasant stuff... For some homeowners, sweating of the windows became an ongoing battle as soon as the winter... takes possession. Here is just a quick overview on Windows. Most modern insulated windows are filled with Argon gas which provides more insulating properties then just plain air. Over time, insulated window seal can fail causing the Argon to be lost and possibly letting humid air enter. If condensation does not occur, widows that have lost the Argon gas are difficult to detect. Under proper conditions, lost gas can be easy to see with the infrared camera. When window seals fail they show a temperature difference from other windows in the home. Please feel free to contact us directly via the facebook Page, Phone or email provided below if you have any questions: [email protected] Cell: 613-407-0062 Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and the best long weekend !!! Cheers

PLEASE READ THIS !!! Every Homeowner Should Know, ... That's The Most Critical Time Of The Year ! Greetings I hope everyone stays warm in these very WINDY, freezing days! I feel like I want to share with all of you some information that may be useful down the road in order to prevent or even to act promptly if some action needs to be taken. We will talk about the roofing materials, in most cases it will be ASPHALT SHINGLE, that becomes a huge headache, when it all of the sudden decides to take off your roof and to be GONE WITH THE WIND... isn't that frustrating?! Well, unfortunately, this happens too often, when your roof was executed in the cold weather. The main big thing about it is, that if that's the case, your ASHPHALT SHINGLES become so vulnerable to be blown away as the self adhesive strip which intended to be as a GLUE on the shingles does not work in cold weather, and entire roofing material does not act as a one big cover/piece. Having said that, the only way to make it working is to apply the SPECIAL ROOFING CEMENT between the shingles when the roofer actually installing it. Rarely it is done as the roofers sometimes tooooo busy to spend another hour or two for this. THE RECOMMENDATION To go OUTSIDE NOW, and take a look very closely to the roof all over the house in order to observe ANY MISSING SHINGLES !!! It is very critical especially when some prior repairs took place. We all know - the missing roof covering IS THE ROOF LEAKAGE AND DAMAGE TO THE INTERIORS AND THE STRUCTURE. Please Feel Free To Respond With Your Own Experience And Comments. Proudly Servicing Local Community. Yours Truly Arseny Reider on behalf of SPECTRUM Home Inspection
