Spontaneous Combustion Sculpture Studio 30.09.2020

One of my totem figures from a few years back seen here at Machal Gardens, a stunning oasis of plants , trees and flowers in Spencerville, Ontario. This figure ...is actually part of a grouping of three figures commissioned by Machal gardens in 2015. The sculpture sits on the sight where a massive old willow tree once stood. The client wanted something to remember and honour the tree they loved so much and so I came up with this idea of sculpting these three figures. I gave them a mossy, bark like texture and placed them together in a sentinel like pose as if they were guarding the space where this mighty tree once stood. The piece is called Spirit of the tree. Yes it has been a long, cold, snowy winter here in the Ottawa area but I refused to let that stop me from making art. Here’s a sneak peek at a brand new armature for a bear sculpture I completed over the past few months. For all you coffee lovers out there, this big fella will be called, First Cup of the Day!

Continuing to make progress on my latest commission a life sized sheep sculpture done in cement and paper pulp. During the past two weeks I’ve been wrestling with the material trying to coax it into looking like real sheep’s wool. Getting there slowly but surely.

We moved this little fella Winston bear into ArtScene gallery this afternoon. He’s been given a place of honour right by the front entrance. Looks like he’s taking his new found role of guarding the gallery space rather seriously, doesn’t it?

Two bunnies in the works. Part of a planned series called Zen bunnies. Sculpture on the left is called Gratitude bunny in the style of Botero. One on the right is simply called Gratitude bunny.

Been working on a new, monumental sized rabbit sculpture. It's part of a five sculpture series entitled 'Zen bunnies.' Here's a picture of the third in the series. It's called 'Gratitude bunny' and it's seen here at the armature stage and I've added a picture from last week when I started to rough in the final form and lay down the concrete mixture. More progress pics to follow.

As you can see Mr bear is donning his scarf as the weather turns colder around these parts. Definitely too cold and snowy these days to play with concrete mixes. The return of winter weather doesn't mean I have to abandon my sculptural pursuits altogether. Simply means it's time to plan new sculptures for 2017 and work on some armatures. Want to be ready to hit the ground running when Spring returns. Stay tuned folks. Got a new bear armature in the works and just started an armature for a giant english hare sitting in a buddha like pose. Can't wait to see these two new ideas come alive! Planning to put a gallery show together at some point in 2017 of my bears and bunny friends. Stay tuned.

A couple of new bear pieces completed in 2016. Stay tuned for more surprises in 2017. Currently working on a really big bear. Completed the armature and now unfortunately we wait for Winter to abate and warm weather to return so I can get playing with the messy stuff again!

Spent time today working out some armature issues on a new figurative piece...my first sculpture of 2016. Of course this could all change dramatically in the coming days. Where oh where are you going to take me this time Mr. Muse?
