PLEASE SUPPORT Meet Thomas C. Zachos. Thomas has been struggling with mitochondrial disease for the last 8 years. Mitochondrial disease is a genetic disease that affects the body’s ability to make energy. Thomas has committed himself to helping, inspiring others and raising disease awareness through his Instagram account (@lifesjourneythomasz). He has decided to actively raise funds to support research and hopefully some day soon even treatment options.... Thomas has launched a special fundraising effort hoping to generate even more funding for research. Please support Thomas by visiting the website and purchasing the merchandise that Thomas has helped design and create. ALL funds generated by this effort will be donated to the Mitochondrial Innovation Initiative (MITO2i). MITO2i (MITO2i.ca) is a Canada wide organization of researchers, clinicians and academic institutions dedicated to transforming our understanding and treatment of mitochondrial disease and dysfunction. Please visit Thomas’ web site http://lifesjourneythomasz.deco-apparel.com/home and support him in his efforts. We encourage you to share this message if you can. ABOUT THE DISEASE: Mitochondrial disease is a genetic disease that affects the body’s ability to make energy. Living with mitochondrial disease has been compared to trying to power an entire house on just one small battery. There is never enough energy to go around. It affects every organ in the body and impacts each individual differently, even within the same family. Mitochondrial dysfunction has also been implicated in many other diseases (cardiac, diabetes, cancer), so learning more about how our body uses energy has far reaching applications to many very common health issues we all will likely face. There is currently no cure and treatment options reactively deal with the varying conditions that result from the disease process. Last year, Thomas and his parents (Stacy & Gus Zachos) established the first ever Canadian chair for mitochondrial research at the University of Toronto. It is called the Thomas C. Zachos Chair in Mitochondrial Research. Thank you for taking the time to read this! . . . . . . . . . . #barrie #barrieontario See more

Pelvic/thoracic spine rotation PART 2 As a follow up to our post earlier this week, our Chiropractor, DR. ADAM MURPHY, demonstrates a 2nd exercise for the above. ... EXERCISE 2: The second exercise is a whole body movement that encourages pelvic rotation followed by thoracic spine rotation. Starting with the hip and pelvis rotation while keeping the back flat with the ground. One leg reaches across and touches the floor. The upper back then follows in a similar pattern of rotation. From here, the movement is done in reverse with upper back rotation followed by rotation through the pelvis. Check with your therapist to see what exercises are best for you. Pelvic/thoracic spine rotation Our Chiropractor, DR. ADAM MURPHY, demonstrates a key exercise for the above. The ability of separating the pelvic rotation and thoracic spine rotation is very important. Sports involving lots of twisting, (pitchers/batters in baseball and figure skaters) need to have the ability to rotate one body segment at a time. ... This allows for a maximal amount of force generated by isolating each movement. Here is the first exercise to practice to develop this movement pattern. 1 The first one involves a resistance band and foam roller. This exercise isolates the thoracic spine from the pelvis to train upper body rotation. While lying on one side, the top hip is placed over the foam roller. The upper body movement starts with arms separating, thereby stretching the resistance band. Stay tuned for exercise 2 this week! Check with your therapist to see what exercises are best for you. POST PARTUM Happy Monday! Our Naturopath, Dr. Ashley Nelson can help with Post-Partum depression. ... She knows first hand about being a new mom, having just returned from her maternity leave after her first baby, Mackenzie. While most people think of postpartum care as the first few weeks after a baby is born, the reality is that mental and physical recovery can take much longer. For some, depression or anxiety might begin much later. For others, lack of self care can lead to low motivation, poor food choices and little sleep. Being a new mom herself, she has realized that we can’t forget about our own self care!! Here are a few things to think about after you’ve had a baby: Blood work (particularly thyroid and iron levels!) Nutrition (are you getting enough calories, enough protein?) Movement (walking, yoga, exercise classes, when are you moving?) Supplements (what should you be taking to support your body’s recovery; what’s safe for breast feeding) Rest and Support (is your day structured to allow for a break, are you sleeping or able to rest, is anxiety or insomnia making this difficult?) You’re not alone! Reach out to Ashley to book an appointment if you need some support to get you back to feeling like the best mommy your little one could ask for! 480 Huronia Road 705.734.3340 www.sportsmedicine.on.ca . . . . . . . . . #barrie #naturopath #barrienaturopath #health #baby #postpartum #postpartumdepression Dr. Ashley Nelson, ND See more
