Hay belly, shaggy coat, sweaty If this sounds like your horse, it could be a case of PPID. 1530 % of aging horses suffer from PPID, also known as equine Cushing’s disease. It can be easy to miss the early signs and symptoms of PPID. But, if your horse has laminitis, it could be PPID.... Data shows that 1/3 of all laminitic horses may suffer from PPID Your horse could be eligible for a free PPID test! Take the quiz at bicanadaequine.ca/ppid#quiz.
Keep your eyes open for this kitty.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TELL MILD COLIC FROM SEVERE COLIC? Colic is not a disease, rather it is a symptom or behavior due to pain from the abdomen. If you think your... horse has colic, here is a list of things you should do to help your equine friend: Call your veterinarian. Remove all food from the horse. Water should be left with the horse unless there is excessive drinking. Keep the horse in an area where it can be watched. Allow the horse to rest or walk the animal if it is continually rolling or in danger of hurting itself. Continue observation to look for new symptoms. Important information your veterinarian may ask for include specific signs of colic and severity; frequency of bowel movements; recent changes in housing, diet, exercise, etc.; medical history and current medical treatments; color and moistness of the gums; heart and respiratory rate; rectal temperature; capillary refill time (normal is 1-2 seconds) and amount of intestinal sounds (if any). Things to avoid include administering any medications or procedures without first consulting with your veterinarian; passing a stomach tube into the horse's stomach; giving the horse any substance by mouth, particularly liquids; and giving intravenous injections. The key to minimizing colic remains good management and early detection. For more information on colic and how you can prevent it, consult your horse doctor!

Food orders will likely be delayed by up to five business days. Medications are still shipping within 24-48 hours. Please be patient with our staff, they are doing their absolute best to ensure that your furry friends receive the medications and diets that they require.
To help keep veterinary teams, clients and patients safe during the COVID-19 outbreak, pet owners can take the following precautions when visiting a veterinary ...clinic: Call ahead to schedule an appointment. Notify the clinic if you have travelled outside of the country, are showing any symptoms or are feeling unwell, so appropriate precautions can be taken. Refrain from bringing other family members with you to your appointment. Purchase pet food in reasonable amounts (avoid panic buying). Wash/sanitize your hands before and after your appointment and practice social distancing whenever possible. Veterinary clinics have safety protocols in place and are working hard to care for pets during this outbreak. If you have any questions, call your veterinarian.
Happy at Patrick’s day from Springer Animal Hospital - social distancing style.
Be like Secretariat. Keep your distance. Then visit www.joincommonwealth.com
Stay safe and healthy!
Please share! If this poses difficulty to anyone who may not otherwise have a break throughout the work day, please call the office and we will do our best to arrange food and medication pickups. If your pet needs to visit the office, we would be happy to make you an appointment via telephone at 705-753-0324

As your beloved horse ages, subtle changes could signal something more then just getting older. PPID is common in older horses, but identifying it early may ensure a better quality of life for your aging horse. Are you a current client? To request a FREE ACTH test for this month only please go to www.bicanadaequine.ca
Has anyone see Puss Puss? Missing from Main Street in Sturgeon Falls. Please contact us if you have seen her.
"F" IS FOR FALL-CHECKLIST! Now that #fall has officially begun, it’s tempting to be distracted by seasonal activities and pumpkin spice coffee runs away fr...om the barn. However, keep in mind that this time of the year is also ideal to prepare your horse and your property for the arrival of winter. Your veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season, and they can help you make short work of many items on the horse owner fall-checklist. Besides discussing vaccination and dewormers, use this time to chat about what plants and trees become toxic in the fall; at what temperature sheets and blankets might be a good idea; recommended changes in nutrition and exercise program. Your horse doctor has your equine friend's best interest at heart. Let them help you and your horse ease into the colder season without a hitch! #aaep #horsedocs #equinevets #veterinarymedicine #equinemedicine #dvmlife #equestrianlifestyle #horseownerstruggles #allthingsfall #fallyall #fallchecklist #beprepared #winteriscoming

Mya and Kaiser came in together to have their annual Leptospirosis vaccine! Is your dog protected against Leptospirosis? With spring here wildlife carrying the bacteria will be on the move and areas that become damp can host the bacteria. If your dog has exposure to areas were wildlife frequent, lives near areas of still standing water, goes camping or hunting then they could be at risk. Vaccination plays a huge role in prevention. Did you know that humans can contract Lep...tospirosis as well? This spiral shaped bacteria can cause both chronic and acute damage to internal organs such as the liver and kidneys and does not play nice. Leptospirosis requires yearly vaccination. Please call us if you would like more information about the disease, require a booster on the vaccine or would like to start the vaccination process at (705) 753 0324
