Ever heard of the Eat Well Plate idea? The Eat Well Plate idea shows you the types of foods you need to eat, if you’re to enjoy a healthy balanced meal. So what should your plate look like? Ideally your plate should be divided into quarters. With 1/2 the plate consisting of fruits and veggies, 1/4 of whole grains and 1/4 of healthy protein. Your fruits and vegetables are providing you with minerals and vitamins. Whole grains such as quinoa, rice, or whole grain pasta prov...ide you with fibre. And legumes, lean meats or plant based alternatives provide you with protein. We encourage you to try out more plant based proteins since they have more fibre and less saturated fat. You can apply the Eat Well Plate idea to any meal or snack. It’s all about being creative, and finding ways to incorporate various food groups in your meals. We want to see some of your balanced plate meals, send us pictures of your delicious meal ideas! #balancedplate #healthyeating #Sprout

Swipe right to make a smoothie! Smoothies are an excellent addition to your diet. They can be an excellent way start to your day , or an amazing pick me up after a particularly long one.The best thing about smoothies is that the combinations are nearly limitless and its up to you to make it your own according to your preferences ! We like to have a few staple ingredients as a base to the smoothie (ex: bananas, mango, pineapple or berries), before adding more ingredients... to the mix. You can add a leafy vegetable and still have a delicious tasting smoothie, and as a bonus, you can have that nice vibrant green color After adding the base, you can use milk, water, coconut water or juice as the liquid of choice. Soy milk or almond milk work equally well and have the same effect on the smoothie. If you like to add a sweet, twist to your smoothies, consider putting dates, honey or maple syrup into the mix. Finally, if you want to feel fuller and satiated, you can add seeds and nut butter as a finishing touch before blending.

SWIPE TO CREATE GUACAMOLE As a social enterprise, Sprout loves to promote healthy eating and with that comes taking about the amazing health benefits that cooking can bring. Cooking can often be seen as a chore but we hope that you can slowly start to enjoy the process. Its an activity that can make everyone healthier and happier. Research shows that eating regularly home-cooked meals is linked to healthier and happier kids, and teens. By eating... home cooked meals we are likely to consume less sugar and processed foods. Our mental health also improves when we chose to cook at home, especially with others around us. Thats partly because social connections reinforced over meals can help us cultivate a sense of belonging and even reduce symptoms of depression. Sharing the joy of home cooking also preserves cultural knowledge and history as we pass recipes from generation to generation. #BellLetsTalk about how important proper nutrition is to mental health. Nutritional psychiatry is an emerging field in medicine that takes a look at the link between diet and mental wellbeing. A recent study found that the risk of depression was reduced significantly in those who followed a healthy diet that included more fresh fruits, veggies and whole grains. Poor nutrition is a huge issue that tends to impact low income families and students the most, two communities t...hat are also especially vulnerable to mental health issues. Unhealthy eating habits can lead to stress, over tiredness, and increase the risk of developing certain mental illnesses, which is why improving access to healthy and affordable food is so important. Mental health affects all of us in some way or another, and 1 in 5 Canadians experience mental health problems. Together we can work towards ending the stigma, and improve the resources available to at-risk individuals. Share your story with us.
