Here is a quick render of a design I did for a mountainous landscape with a water reservoir situated on a plateau.
I'm getting off to an early start this year. For this backyard, I mixed Parkland Pillar Birch with Mountain Pines to create a privacy screen. Both these plants are narrow, and by having the pines, there is privacy in the winter as well. The main focal point of the garden is the Spring Snow Crabapple and Little Lamb Hydrangeas surrounding it.
I finished creating a model showcasing the existing conditions at Yorkville Park in Toronto. It has been awhile since I have had to create physical models, but I believe I did a good job.
This was the last project that I did in Saskatchewan before moving to Guelph. The clients wanted to remove the grass and turn the front yard into a shrub bed with curb appeal. So, I divided the yard into portions with free flowing forms. For materiality, I used river rock, sand, and cedar mulch. There are 3 circular sand pits that have large rocks in them for curb appeal. For plants, I used creeping junipers, dogwoods, pink beauty potentilla, daylilies, and karl Forster grass.

For this project, I created a series of rooms within the garden, where each room offered the chance to be discovered as you walked through the garden. The garden was structured on a grid that followed the existing elevations of the site. After structuring the garden, I added a badminton court, a rose garden, a tire swing, a pergola, a patio, a dry creek bed with a bridge, and an art studio. To create a hedge around the garden, I used Madame Lemoine Lilacs. The client wanted the garden to have a forest like feel to it; so, I used Red Osier Dogwoods, Bailey Compact Cranberries, Mugo Pines, Scots Pine, and Snowball bushes to form the core of the plantings.
Im in the preliminary stages of putting together a design for an International Garden Design Competition. For this design, there is going to be some floating islands on a shallow lake that are made of wood and have artificial grass as a walking surface. For plants, Im going to use Hydrangeas, Delphiniums, Daylilies, Karl Foerster Grass and Weeping Willows.
These are my three designs that I proposed to the City of Saskatoon for the Wintercity YXE Design Competition for this winter. The designs would be installed in the winter and than removed in the spring. I am waiting to hear what the City of Saskatoons decicion will be. Hopefully, they choose my designs! I would be honoured to build these warming huts this year.
I took the drone to Boffins Gardens to get an aerial snapshot of the fall colors.
I had the pleasure of designing the planting beds for this yard and then doing the plant installation.
A before and after shot of this project. The after shot was created with Vectorworks and Photoshop.
I took the drone up today to take some photos of the skatepark that I designed. I am very proud of it.
This project is coming along wonderfully. Here are some after and before pictures of the yard.
This is one of the larger projects I have finished recently. Im excited to take photos of the final project to show the transformation of this site. The entire backyard and front yard were redesigned. A pergola, outdoor kitchen, raised garden, and Chinese garden were added to the design along with many other features. In terms of flowers, the clients like the color pink; so, I incorporated shrubs with pink flowers into the design: Little Lamb Hydrangea, Russian Almond, and ...the Double Flowering Plum. Tor Spireas, which have white flowers, were also utilized to accent the pink flowers. The clients wanted a Sakura Tree, which is a Japanese Cherry Tree. However, the Sakura does not survive in Saskatchewan. Instead, I incorporated plants that are in the same Prunus family such as Russian Almonds, Double Flowering Plums, and Sand Cherries. For evergreens, I had to primarily use Cedars since they could tolerate the vast amount of shade cast by the existing Elm trees. See more
I finished designing this fireplace seating area. A East to West axis was chosen for this fireplace to draw the attention of visitors to the beautiful view of the farmers fields beyond the seating area. The plants were then arranged around this axis to frame the view and to highlight the surrounding landscape. For the design, Morden Fireglow Roses, which have a red flower, surround the seating area and create a colorful and inviting atmosphere that invites people to enter and sit down. To block the wind, 6 Mugo Pines are planted around the firepit. Ivory Halo Dogwoods were used to provide variegated foliage during the summer and red branches during the winter. 4 Manitoba Maples were selected to create an encompassing canopy and to make the space feel more intimate.
The first design for 2018 is complete! The 3D renders, which look great, are extremely valuable in understanding and envisioning how the landscape design will transpire. For this project, large grouped plantings of Annabelle Hydrangeas, Sarah Bernhardt Peonies, Summer Carnival Hollyhocks, and Northern Gold Forsythia were selected to create the frame for the yard. These four types of plants have tremendous flowers, which gives this project a large floral impact.
Its gardenscape time again!!
It has been super exciting watching this project develop from a concept on paper into a beautiful landscape. I did the design, and Dieter Martin Greenhouse did the installation.
Here is a video walk through of the design I did for the Langham Skatepark Campaign. I am incredibly happy to have helped bring this project to life, and I look forward to seeing it get built. This will be a great addition to the social life of Langham.
This is a concept design for a farmyard in Dalmeny. I am planning on using a Weeping Willow in the front yard. I love that plant.
The clients for this project wanted many different varieties of fruit shrubs and trees. As such, I included in the design kiwis, grapes, blueberries, Saskatoon berries, plums, apples, and haskaps.
It has been a busy week. Here is a concept design I did for a couple in the city. Now, I have to pick the plants and finish it off.
