A kind request came in from CUMFI to our SPS Cultural Unit in November. They requested support for 45 children who are currently living in their Emergency Receiving Homes here in Saskatoon. These children are being loved and cared for by CUMFI staff and they want to bring Christmas Cheer to these homes. The Cultural Unit filled 45 stockings and delivered them on Dec 15th so they could be hung in the homes for each of these children to open on Christmas Day ... Thank you so much Cultural Unit, for again going above and beyond to help those in need in our city! The smiles you will bring to those children is what Christmas is all about!

We at Victim Services value our volunteers so much. They come in each week to provide support to victims of crime and traumatic events within our city. What they maybe don’t realize is the impact they have on us personally as staff. They become our work family, and our friends. We learn from them daily, and become better at the jobs we do because of them too! Carl is no exception, we always look forward to our Fridays with him, his humour, his suggestions for our Fraud Team and his wonderful words of advice are always appreciated. Today Carl was gifted a jacket from us at Victims Services by our Chief of Police for dedicating over 10yrs of service to our unit. Thank you Carl.

Exciting times for our friends at the Crisis Nursery and the Parent Aid Program. They have rebranded to Haven Family Connections with the Crisis Nursery being renamed to Haven Kids House and the Parent Aid Program to Haven Family Support. You do not need to be in crisis or involved with Social Services to access these supports, which is a common belief. This rebrand is an opportunity to lessen the stigma and make services more friendly to any family who just needs a little help! Check out the brand new website. :)

May we never forget the sacrifice that was made for us to live as freely as we do today. Freedom is not free. "Where Tommies Go, The Poppies Grow" painting by Jacqueline Hurley.

SIMFC will be offering a sharing circle, Wicitizon, on Wednesdays, 5 to 7 pm. for women who are survivors of violence. The circle will assist women who have suf...fered through the trauma of violence to express their experience and to share feelings, such as shame, that is part of surviving violence. The circle is intended to give participants a sense of hope, to learn about what resources are available to them, and to know that they are not alone in their lived experience. The program starts on November 18. For more info, contact Shauna at [email protected]. See more

Please consider being more charitable than usual this year, if you are in a position to do so as the pandemic is going to affect many people and businesses.

A good thing to try is writing down a list of boundaries you would like to set. Number them with 1 being the easiest boundary to set and the last number being the hardest. An example could be telling a coworker they keep parking in your spot (or any of the ones mentioned below). Work your way from 1 up (at your own pace). This will help you build confidence, preserve your energy and will also help you learn who is a good person to keep in your life. When people don't respect your boundaries or become defensive when you solidify them, they don't respect you. Setting boundaries is hard but necessary.

An important perspective to consider anytime you feel inclined to take out your phone when you drive past any incident.

Anyone get the blues in fall/winter when the weather changes and we see less sun? This photo is obviously from the US but Canada is hit very hard by SAD and most Canadians are Vitamin D deficient to begin with. Vitamin D and checking in with loved ones and/or maybe a therapist is a good way to help. The holidays can make it even tougher for some! Now throw COVID on top... not good. Take care out there.

When are you ever going to get this chance again? Do everyone a favor and stay home today. Thanks to all of the first responders out working hard to keep us safe.

A good break down to understand who is responsible for what! Remember to vote this election season. Many have fought for our right to do so!

This post is a tribute to these 2 beautiful souls, both of whom were lost to cancer this year. These people are particularly special to our unit as they were Constables assisting the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Units. Cst. Don Sanders #534 served Canada as an RCMP member for many years before transitioning to SPS. He served for approximately 30 years in total and we lost him to cancer at the end of March. He had a big smile, a beautiful laugh and a way of making fun of you an...d making you feel special at the same time. He was an assisting constable in the Sex Crimes unit when he received his diagnosis and passed away. Cst. Christine Talloden #794 worked in Central Records for a number of years before earning her sworn badge. She was working out of the Child Centre assisting on child abuse files when she received her diagnoses in April. She passed away last night. She lived for her son Ethan and was always there for a heart to heart or to lend a helping hand on a file no matter what she had on the go. She did it with a smile and was known for her organizational skills and attention to detail. These constables did alot of behind the scenes work on hard files with no complaints or accolades, assisting with interviewing victims and witnesses, gathering evidence and making sure our investigators had everything they need to work their files. We lay them to rest now, their end of watch has come. Please say a prayer, send some love to their families or light a candle in their memory. They are both so missed. See more

Remember to practice self-care during these times. The weather is changing, COVID numbers are rising and the holidays are going to look very different. Practice boundaries, see your therapist, journal, go for a walk, drink water. Do things that nourish your body, mind and soul!

A great resource. Proper sexual education is an important part of the discussion around sexual assault, boundaries and healthy relationships!
