Squamish Food Bank 12.02.2021

A big ol’ non-perishables and high priority item delivery! We’ve got diapers for all ages, baking supplies, snacks and staples, and lots more. . . We’re so grateful to be able to keep our Market shelves stocked thanks to your donations (and our wonderful partners Nesters Market and Save-On Foods, who facilitate these orders and cut us deals where they can ). Woohoo!

Today is the LAST DAY that your donations will be matched by the Brew Creek Centre, contributing to twice as many home-cooked meals, twice as many high priority items (such as hygiene products and diapers), and twice as many healthy ingredients pr...ovided to the Squamish community! . . Check out our website (link in our bio) to learn more about our programs, and donate! Help us reach $100,000! See more

Folks and friends! We’re counting down with one week left, to raise $50,000 to be matched by the Brew Creek Centre in Whistler (@thebrewcreekcentre). . . From now, until January 31st, every dollar you donate to the Squamish Community Food Hub at Under One Roof will be doubled. This allows to us keep our shelves stocked with high-priority items, like diapers, toilet paper, and infant formula, as well as helps supplement the staples, like soups, beans and peanut butter (and jam... of course!) . . With your help, we’ve raised an incredible $40,000, and are only $10,000 away from our goal!!! You can donate online (link in bio), via cash or cheque OR - you can stop in and say hello! Market donations are also counting towards this total, so now is an excellent time to swing by and visit, grab some food for the week, and leave us a donation that way. Thank you thank you! See more

Great question! You’re absolutely right we are still the Squamish Food Bank, with a couple of changes. When we joined the Under One Roof space, we wanted to change our name to better reflect the purpose we want to serve in our community creating a welcoming, dignified space for everyone and anyone to access good, healthy food. While promoting food security and increasing access to food for those who need it most is still central to our cause, we wanted to flip the script ...on what engaging with a Food Bank has to look like. We changed the name, because it looks and feels like a small, community grocery market. Everyone who visits can browse at their own pace with a shopping cart and take what they want and/or need that day. Folks can choose to make a donation on the way out, or notno pressure, no judgment. We wanted to create a space where everyone can feel comfortable to access the food that they need, with no questions asked. At Under One Roof, in partnership with Helping Hands, we also have a community kitchen. We have a group of excellent chefs, who whip up 3 healthy meals for our building residents, as well as the larger community, on the daily. Because the kitchen works closely with the Market, we’ve started referring to the ecosystem of food-focused programming at Under One Roof as the Squamish Community Food Hub. So, to summarize! We are still the Squamish Food Bank, referring to our community grocery space as The Market, located in the Under One Roof building, working in partnership with our kitchen, and building and growing the Squamish Community Food Hub. There has been lots of change and growth in our organization in these past few months, and we are excited to keep on getting better, to best serve you folks our wonderful community.

The giving kind: This year, despite COVID-19, was the best year yet for the B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive. And when the need is so great. This year, 9,534 lbs o...f food was collected. The initiative was made possible by 60 route volunteers and an additional 16 volunteers who sorted. And of course, it would not be possible without the generosity of Squamish residents, including a donation from the Sikh Temple of 424lbs of food. Domino's Pizza donated sustenance for volunteers. The local event is co-ordinated by the Squamish Multifaith Association in partnership with the Squamish branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Squamish Food Bank. "I believe the take-home message is: that in these challenging times, people are yearning to come together, support each other, and serve the needs of their communities. In short to unite in service," said Geraldine Guilfoyle, a Thanksgiving Drive organizer. Photos courtesy Geraldine Guilfoyle See more
