We’re back in 2021 highlighting Ontario squash superstars who are celebrated inducted members into the Ontario Squash Hall of Fame. Inducted in 2013 is none other than Player Graham Ryding. Ryding played professionally in the 90s and 00s, reaching a career-high world ranking of World No. 10 in November 1999 after having joined the Professional Squash Association in 1993. Ryding was a semi-finalist in the 2004 World Open, a member of the 1997 World Team Championships where Can...ada placed second and a three-time Canadian National Champion. Graham worked his way up the competitive ladder beginning with numerous junior Ontario titles to be followed by 7 Canadian junior Championships, from Under 13 through Under 19. He quickly moved into the senior ranks and added titles in the Canadian Soft Ball Championships in 1997, 1998 and again in 2004. He represented Team Canada several times throughout his career- bringing home the silver medal in 1997! Graham retired from the PSA in 2007, but you can still catch him and his family on the courts in Toronto! Watch out for up and coming Ryding/Baizley offspring on the Squash Ontario junior circuit. Read more about Graham at ontariosquashhalloffame.com. Applications are now open for the 2022 Ontario Squash Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Throughout November and December 2020, we looked to the squash community for support to elevate our current school squash program equipment that is loaned out to schools at no cost. Since many of our regular outreach efforts to grow the sport have been placed on hold during this pandemic, enhancing our school squash program is a priority to ensure that squash is being introduced and played in physical education classes throughout Ontario. This way, hundreds of elementary and... secondary students can be exposed to the sport every year. With thanks to our many generous donors, Squash Ontario surpassed it’s goal of 300 racquets donated through both financial contributions and donated gently used racquets! We look forward to kicking off 2021 with plenty of resources to help teachers and schools take advantage of our equipment loans and physical education resources. Thanks to your help, squash will be played in gym classes throughout Ontario, where students across Ontario to fall in love with squash!

First crack of the top 20 in 2 decades! Hollie Naughton has reached a career-high of 20 in the world! Naughton is a two-time national champion and multiple Pan American Games medalist and the first Canadian women’s player to reach the top 20 since Heather Wallace more than two decades ago. Strong and steady results have carried Naughton through the 2020 season, including deep runs at Platinum Level PSA Tournaments. Naughton recently competed in the CIB Egyptian Open (Cairo, E...gypt) defeating Ineta Mackevia (Latvia) and Lucy Turmel (England) in the first two rounds. In the third round Naughton faced world number 12 Nele Gilis (Belgium) losing 3-1 (11- 5, 5-11, 6-11, 5-11), narrowly missing out on an appearance in the Quarterfinals. Naughton’s next tournament will be the CIB Black Ball Squash Open 2020 in Cairo, Egypt. She is scheduled to face 13th seed Rowan Elaraby in the first round. Tournament information and results can be found at the PSA World Tour website. Congratulations Hollie Naughton!

Gordon Anderson, a member of the Ontario Squash Hall of Fame, was inducted in 2013 as a Player. It would be a great disservice to Gordon Anderson to define him by the number of Ontario, Canadian, US and world squash titles he has won. They are only a part albeit an important part of this man. Gordon’s roots are firmly in Toronto, Ontario where at the age of 12, he took his first squash lesson at the Toronto Cricket, Skating & Curling Club. That began a 50 year love affai...r with the game where he he has worn many hats. As a player, he holds world titles in singles, hardball and doubles, something only a very few squash players have ever achieved. In all, he has won five world titles, one Mexican title, 17 U.S. Championships, and seven Canadian Championships. In fact, he won the inaugural Canadian Open Softball title in 1974 the same year that he won the Hardball title. Quite a feat to win both in the same year! And he counts five Ontario Championships to his impressive list of achievements. The term, fair play epitomizes Gordon’s on court and off court behaviour. His ready smile and sense of humour together with his superb racquet skills made him one of the most popular players on the Professional circuit in the ‘70s and ‘80’s.

Today for Tuesday's feature of the Ontario Squash Hall of Fame members, we circle back to a name that has popped up many times in our Thursday Trivia contests: Gary Waite. Gary hails from Sarnia Ontario. After having been exposed to squash by his parents Lewis and Janet at the age of 12, Gary came under the care of Jack Clift and his weekend junior squash program and became part of a burgeoning junior squash movement in the area inundating courts at Pinsonneault’s and the Sa...rnia Riding Club for years to come. Through the tireless efforts of Jack, Lew, Janet and so many other parents at the time Sarnia could lay claim to a National Champion in every age group. Through the added generosity and guidance of Jack Fairs and the team at Western, Gary garnered more titles than any other junior squash player in the history of Canadian squash. He would continue this trend into the professional ranks to become one of the most decorated professional squash players in the history of the game worldwide. In 1993, while attending Harvard University, Gary could lay claim to being the #1 hardball singles player, #2 hardball doubles player and #12 softball singles player in the Worlda feat in combined rankings not achieved by any player in the history of any of the three disciplines and not likely to be duplicated.
