Cognitive dissonance is a huge problem in equestrianism, from the top all the way down. If it wins gold medals then the training must be correct ? Because the t...op riders and their trainers use all the right words to describe what they are doing, our diligent brains convince our eyes that this uncomfortable picture is actually what fits with the beautiful words we read. And we work really hard at recreating that picture because we all want to do our best for the horse. Until our horse breaks, or rebels. Or until we stumble across someone doing it right in their backyard. Once we see or feel true lightness and connection and beauty in riding the scales fall from our eyes and we don’t swallow the parroted words of false prophets anymore. Not everyone has had that epiphany yet. The most dangerous advice comes from those who are still fighting that inner battle- holding onto false belief is a state of huge internal conflict and creates massive resistance to change before the breakthrough occurs. Everyone has eyes. Eyes never lie, although the brain will pull all sorts of stunts to fit what we see into our adopted belief system. Anyone can see if a horse is uncomfortable or resisting. Once we see true lightness, all the beautiful words in the classical texts make practical sense and nothing else will satisfy our dreams.

Every time I have lost control of my emotions working a young colt the outcome has left me 2 steps behind where I started. Emotions rarely have a positive outco...me when training. There’s been many times and I suspect there will be a few more and when that time comes I’ll leave shaking my head at myself. I’ll admit that if I was a better horseman I could’ve progressed that horse by thinking, not reacting in response to frustration. It happens to you. It happens to me, and it happens to the best in the world. Our job is to recognize it as many times as possible before it starts. Training horses, even on the most elite level is nothing more than a series of failures with just enough success to keep us hooked on this drug. In a conversation with Cody Patterson last night he said to a young aspiring horseman If you feel like you’re screwing up every horse you’re riding you’re at least on the right path to figuring it out. Just like this post that borders on having no point, horse training borders on no positive outcome. There’s only the pursuit of our own knowledge imparted as fairly as possible on the most forgiving animal besides a golden retriever, your horse. -Dusty Whitford www.horsepro.tv

Well, had a great weekend at the Lazy D Summer Slam roping hosted by the dunks. The calf roping was a lot of fun, Kato worked pretty well with plenty of room to improve on both his and my part. We made the short go but I missed the calf, no fault of katos. My good friend and roping partner Rafael Lara placed 5th in the calf roping on Koz!... The team roping on Sunday was a long day, but kato and I were fortunate enough to end up with the win with a new partner and friend from quebec! This young horse is really starting to come along nicely.

It’s the control of the feet through the mind that a person’s after. If you’ve missed that on the ground, on the start, why you’ve missed the part that means ...the most to the horse. The person should be focused on getting the best possible connection with the horse on the ground, through feel, if they want to have those parts of the horse available to them when they ride." From the book 'True Horsemanship Through Feel' by Bill Dorrance. Image of Bill is by Leslie Desmond and was taken at Mt.Toro back in 1997.

Something we’ve been telling our students all along. There’s so much more to riding, than simply getting in the saddle.

I don't think it's an accident that his body is a perfect mirror of the horse (from the clinic flyer I shared yesterday). Or maybe the horse is a perfect mirror... of his body? We should do in our body what we want the horse to do in his body. Shoulders here. Seat there. Balance where? Easier said than done of course.....and on so many levels!! I can't stop staring at these pictures. Goals? Aspirations? Pure poetry. Buck Brannaman pictured, in case anyone was wondering Original photos by Desiree Sides

Rider: Sometimes I wonder if I want to even ride anymore. Mind: You should probably just quit. Rider: But i've come so far.... Mind: This is a lot of heartache and emotional and financial stress. Rider: But sometimes it's ok to not be ok. Sometimes if you want to ride the pendulum of success, you will hit some lows before swinging up even higher. Mind: But this slump is taking forever. You'll never get out of it. Rider: Just like when you are training horses, sometimes in order for the horse to learn, you just have to wait it out. Patience is powerful. Mind: But this is too painful. Rider: Pain means you have passion. That you care. And you should never give up on something that you care this deeply about. Mind: Lets keep everything comfortable and stop pushing ourselves. Comfort is easy. Pushing is more pain. Rider: I'm sorry. Mind: No need to apologize, lets just ease off for a while. Rider: No, I'm not apologizing. I'm telling you I'm sorry so you can prepare yourself for more pain. I'm going to keep on pushing harder than ever. Mind: No, you can't! Rider: Maybe I can't. But I would rather can't than won't. Mind: Noooo! Rider: Yes, so get ready to roll. Mind: Alright then. Lets go for this. Rider: Seriously? You gave up that easy? Mind: Yes. Rider: But all those years, all that self doubt, all those times you told me I couldn't. All the pity, the frustration when you said I'd never succeed. You are giving up just like that? All it took was one time to fight back? Mind: We will do whatever you want to do. You do realize you've just been talking to yourself this whole time. Sometimes the best dressage lessons have nothing to do with riding. PC to Joseph Newcomb

Well, adding to our list of firsts for Kato, we competed in the OXC futurity class yesterday! Our morning run was a little rocky, but we bounced back for the evening run and had a solid time! He’s improving so much and continues to amaze me and impress everyone we meet. He’s truly going to be something special to watch out for next year!

Is there anyone interested in Ranch Roping. Starting to casually see if there is any interest here in Ontario for this style of roping. Maybe get something going in the future with enough people and interest. Please let me know. Pic for attention.

QUIT I never have respected a Quitter. Too many people in todays world don’t follow through with a Commitment. But when it comes to Horses knowing when to Qu...it is the most important part of any training program. I’ve seen Horses become successful despite unfavorable Techniques, because of the timing of the Quit. Why is quitting at the right time so important? When you take away pressure that is in timing with the desired response, you are encouraging the Horse to communicate. Rest is a big motivator to our Equine partners. A Horse actually learns after the action. They have to have time to digest the information of what just happened, if not the mind will run faster than the feet can keep up. There has to be something in it for the Horse, and that is the release of pressure. Quitting a horse and getting off them to loosen the girth is huge part of my program. Quitting when the Horse wants to give you more. Not when they have nothing to give. This also has an impact not only mentally but physically. When they lose their Air they lose their ability to think clearly. The more they are Fatigued while working the more the injuries come into play. Knowing when to Quit your Horse is a key element in Horsemanship. #Total Feeds, Inc.#5 Star Equine Products#American Hat Company#Kiser Arena Specialists#Triangle C Ranch
