Located on a drain that flows into the Marsh River is our Jeremie Lussier Grassed Waterway project. Lussier planted perennial grasses all along the drain which is prone to flooding in high flow events. This project combats soil erosion around the drain and minimizes the risk of flooding his crops while simultaneously giving back to the community at large through environmental benefits including nutrient and sediment reduction in our waterways. Reducing soil erosion is important at both an environmental level and an infrastructure level. Environmentally it protects wildlife and plant life by reducing excess nitrogen and phosphorus released into water and reducing sedimentation in waterways. Infrastructure is less susceptible to sedimentation clogging up waterways reducing the cost of maintenance and improving water flow reducing crop and yield losses... Soil erosion is the wearing away of topsoil by natural forces such as wind and water or through farming activities such as tillage. Lack of cover on the soil can leave it vulnerable and susceptible to erosional forces.
