Speeding & Stunt Driving October 18 24 is National Teen Driver Safety Week. This week helps build awareness of teen driver safety issues and gets youth involved as part of the solution. Let’s keep our communities safe this week and every week Today we are talking about a very important road safety topic excessive speed and stunt driving. Not only is speeding risky, it’s illegal. You could end up paying a fine, face criminal charges, lose your licence or go to jail.... Speeding is a factor in 1/3 of teen driver deaths in Canada. Teens are more likely to speed when other teens are with them in the vehicle. Don’t put the lives of your friends and loved ones at risk by speeding. Always drive at a speed that will let you stop safely, whether roads are wet or dry. Speeding 16 km/h over the speed limit is 3 demerit points and the faster the drive, the more demerit points you will accumulate. Stunt driving, or racing, is when you drive 50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit. When you are stopped for stunt driving, police will suspend your licence on the spot for 7 days and impound your vehicle for 7 days. You are responsible for paying the storage costs for the 7 days your vehicle is impounded. Upon your first conviction, you could face a $2000 to $10000 fine, jail term of up to 6 months, a licence suspension up to years, and 6 demerit points. Plus your insurance rates will go way up, if you can even get insurance! Did you know that squealing or spinning your tires is also considered stunt driving and you will face the same penalties as you would for excessive speed? Remember speed limits are put in place for a reason follow the posted limits. Don’t risk your life just for the thrill of driving faster than the limit. #SSPS2020
